I must say it wold probably be a huge adjustment not to be able to say "look there, listen to that, etc." and standing around a fire at night on my own wouldn't be the best feeling, BUT, I would definitely and happily go alone, as I would not pass up an opportunity to visit KNP too easily.

How did you find your first trip alone?

Ian Grant it was great!
Yes you do mis your wife and little one but it also gives you time to find yourself again. Get closer to God and relax.

There however are challenges like Crested Val has with the spiders. My biggest is to drive and look both ways. I am sure I missed a lot of sightings. :wall:

My mother goes to Kruger alone twice a year. The first trip was a bit of an adjustment but she has since realized that she can do whatever she wants whenever she wants. She can sit and watch the birds for hours, drive all day, pick her route, eat when she feels like it and so on. 8)

That is the biggest problem with going alone. :wall: :wall:

For me, who has always travelled solo (first KNP trip 1984), it's rather an adjustment to travel with someone. As a solo traveller (to many SANParks), you get very used to always being able to do what you want when you want -- and to having all your cameras within easy reach on the passenger seat! When I invited a friend to join me in KTP several years ago, it was a major adjustment to adapt to another's different rhythms and habits, but I enjoyed the experience and the change in dynamics.

It's true that a solo traveller inevitably misses some things, since you must be driver, game spotter and photographer all on your own -- there are definitely advantages to a second pair of eyes! However on one trip, when I had more interaction with others than usual (meeting up with friends for a few days plus connecting with various forumites in camps), I found that I sorely missed my time alone, as I am used to having time alone to reflect and just enjoy the camp sights and sounds (particularly at night) without the 'interruption' of socialising.

Arks - you put it beautifully!

I have been to KNP on my own a few times - mostly on my way to or after a course. I love going with family and friends but on one's own there is freedom to go and do whatever one wants, when one wants etc.

A friend once said "Aren't you scared?" I replied "Of what?". I think driving around Jhb poses far more "danger" than in KNP.

If it is a case of going on one's own or not going at all, I would definitely say - go on your own. One meets other people to cht to at camps, picnic sites etc.

Hi

I have just very recently done my 2 solo drives to Kruger, and I must say it is pretty difficult trying to spot, drive and take pics :cam: , but it is still awesome in a sense is that there is peace and quite and you can drive at your own pace with no one telling you am hungry, no lets not take that route etc. So I loved my solo drives, although when I saw a Leopard I really wanted to take a pic and a video but could not tripple task as I was driving, taking pics, so could not video.

But yes I would defo do Solo drives again.

I have done a couple of solos, but mostly only a night or two. I do drives on my own quite often (SO not an early riser !) Being able to stop for what I want is great, but I would miss the company at night!

One way to counter the "looking both sides" problem is to follow another car or two. Assuming they are looking properly ! Otherwise just accept that you will see what you will see
