My wife and I (gosh but that sounds like the Brit royal family) will be visiting Kruger for the third (in 18 months) in seven weeks time.
Having lived in Rhodesia and Zimbabwe we both love Africa.
Kruger is the greatest place we have ever visited and we fully intend to spend as much time as possible in "The Cente of the Earth".
Actually "Paradise on Earth" is probably a better decription.
Roll on 02 November.

Reading these posts I once again realise how privilaged and blessed we are to have the KNP on our doorstep. I have been visiting the park for 49 years (first time when I was 3) and each visit still remains very special.

I have so enjoyed reading all your stories. Like Painter, I feel very privileged to be able to vsit so often.... though I am not as close as Painter.

We first visited Kruger in December 1994, because we saw it in a guidebook and were fascinated by the fact that you could actually drive yourself around and see dangerous animals (this still amazes people I work with every time I go). From overseas, it was really hard to find out about accommodation in the parks, so we stayed in a hotel in Hazyview for a few days after spending the rest of our trip in the Cape.

As South Africans will know, it was very different then - the camp shops were filled with safari equipment and lots of jewellery made from semi-precious stones. Restaurants were quite formal. There were many fewer rhinos and I remember being disappointed not to see one. That was incentive enough on its own to start planning a return trip, which we made in 1997, staying at Berg, Satara and Mopani. Amazing as it seems now, hardly anyone else was staying at Mopani in September and it was really easy to extend our stay by a few days. Driving north of Shingwedzi we did not see a single car all afternoon.

We return for our 7th visit this December.

Well, we first went in the first year we moved to Joburg from UK in the 70s - a colleague of my Dad's recommended it. I was about 5 at the time. We were hooked from the first visit, and went at least twice a year after that. Living back in the UK now, but have just booked my next visit ( no idea what count I'm up to, 25 or so visits I guess) in Nov - can't wait! And thanks to this forum, found out about Tamboti and managed to book 2 nights there :D

Thanks Elzet! Can't wait to be back in the kruger - can honestly say I don't even care what animals I get to see, just being back with the noises and sights of the bush will be fantastic. Although wouldn't mind a leopard sighting of course :)

well...we went to visit my inlaws who were already visiting over there....of course it would have been a lot cheaper to visit them here at their house
Long story short we simply fell in love with Kruger and the South African People. Africa for us was at the time a once in a lifetime adventure. Now it is an obsession and we're scheming and conniving to get back there!
This Forum is invaluable and a font of information... We will go back and once again smell the Braai fires as we listen to the sounds of the African night

Such a pity that so many of us "foreigners" had to find the parks by chance, I know in most of our press the only time the parks, and particularly the Kruger is mentioned is when they are advertising the private game reserves and as us mites know they are nothing like stopping in the park. To blazes with the luxury surely we come for the animals and the peace and quiet. I love to sit outside at night with the braiis going and watch the stars and listen to the noises in the bush. Roll on October.

Just finished 2000 km of KNP roads and tracks and did it all with an open mind on what I would be seeing. That is one of the beauties of being in a park like KNP, you can wonder and anything that you happen to see is super.
The noises and smells of the African bush are the things that make me dream.
