Around 1.4 million as fas as my memory goes.
You can see very exact figures in the Annual Reports: http://www.sanparks.org/about/annual/

Visitors to the Kruger Park

Unread postby Thebi » Mon Aug 04, 2014 2:38 pm

Anyone have stats for the number of visitors to the park for the last 20 to 30 years by calendar year? Are there stats for each camp broken down between huts and camping? I am just interested in seeing the rate of increase in visitors year on year.

Other members of the forum may be interested to know the in the year ended March 2013 the KNP had a total of 1 450 481 visitors of which 913 237 stayed in the hutted units and 432 515 were campers.
Unit occupancy during the year was 77,7% and camp site occupancy was 65,7%.
Activities sold (I assume night drives, bush braais, etc) was 153 696.
Total visitors to ALL PARKS was 2 241 472 of which 1 551 633 were day visitors so only 689 839 actually stayed over in a park.
The average length of stay (in all parks combined) was 1.81 days in accommodation provided and 2,36 days camping.
The cost of accommodation averaged R727,28 up from R560,48 in the 2009/10 year - 29,75% increase over 3 years.
Of the total visitors 75,8% were SA residents.

How many...

beds, camp sites and slots for day visitors are there? Does anybody have any official numbers? Somethere I read something like 4.600 beds in all camps together, does that sound reasonable?

Hi ice, although I don't have exact numbers, that does sound reasonable.

Some of the big camps can accommodate hundreds of guests. Maybe someone on the forum might have more accurate info.

It would probably be a simple matter of looking at each camp in turn to see what their stats are and then adding them up. Not sure if there is a total figure given.

But for day visitors it is a little easier because each gate has an allocation - most of them 550/day of which 60% can be prebooked.

If I do find total figures I will post them.

Have you read the entrance permit? Do you KNOW the Conditions of Entry?

Thank you Elsa, for that very informative document.

I think what we basically want to know is, should Kruger be fully booked, how many guests in total can they accommodate in one night?

I hope I didn't miss it in that annual report

well, I guess you could use the annual report to sort of deduct the numbers I'm looking for

the table on p. 38 says that in KNP appr 892.000 bed nights and appr. 149.000 camp nights were told, accumulating to 61 % and 64 % occupancy so in theory 1.462 million bed nights 233.000 camp nights could have been sold. Divide these numbers with 365 days per year and you'll end up with something like 4.000 beds and 640 camp sites. You would than have to add the number of day visitors.

This first number (4.000 beds + 640 camp sites) is extremely close to what I found while surfing the net (4.600 guests per night)

In the updated 2014 version of Kruger Nation Park questions an answered they list the stats

*4356 in SANParks managed beds
*4154 campsite beds (that would be if each site was being used at its 6 person capacity)
*302 in concessions
*8812 in total ( this also includes visitors on trails etc)
