Hi,

We were wondering how many people actually saw animals in Kruger in action... meaning observing a successful hunt, Hyeanas and lions fighting over a kill etc.
We saw two lions on 1 July 2008 at 9:30am trying to hunt impalas in the tar road(H4-2), 2km outside LS camp. They were unsuccessful

(Seconds before the chase!)

Would like to hear your stories, where it happened in the park and pictures if possible

Hi

We saw an impala killed by lions right in front of us on LS road.
Saw a lioness chase and pull down a buffalo also on LS road but on the other side of the river.
From our bungalow overlooking the river at Olifants, we saw lions chasing herds up and down but not successfull.
Heard lions kill a zebra in the early hours of the morning at Croc Bridge on the other side of the fence.

Not seen by me, but the family saw a pride of lions near Tamboti kill two baffalo right next to each other, one was being eaten while he was still standing, and the other (already dead) had her unborn calf pulled out by the lions.

Saw cheetah (3) kill an impala in Letaba river, right below where we were parked.
Lion kill a zebra at a waterhole between L/S and Tshokwane
Wilddog kill 2 impala about 1km from Croc Bridge - gruesome.

These sightings were seen over a period of years.

Last year just outside Skukuza we were watching a pack of Wild dogs and they managed to flush an Impala and chased it, it leapt clean over a huge bush and then cleared the tar road in one leap and disappeared into the bush with the dogs in hot pursuit.
We never really found out whether they caught it or not, somehow don't think so and I have new respect for Impala, after that.

Lake Panic - Gabar Goshawk attacking a weaver caught by its leg in nesting material. Photos were up somewhere, not sure where or if the thread's still there. Olifants Camp - Lions stalking impalas but missing the kill. That was from the camp viewing deck. Too far and too quick for decent photos. Satara - hyenas fighting over food thrown over the fence by campers. Salitje Road - Shikra missing an unsuspecting ground squirrel by millimetres. Again so quick we didn't have time to react.

Hi folks
2007 south of Lower Sabie on the tar, saw 2 cheetahs in turns chasing a hyena. We watched them for about 30 mins. Also in 2005 saw a slender mongoose jump out and kill a dove just south of Timbervati. 1995, north of Nkumbe saw three cheetahs chase a steenbok unsuccessfully. The cheetah were fast but the steenbok had a better side step!

I know this isn't the Kruger but in the Kalgadi in a dry riverbed a cheetah was walking and suddenly stopped under a tree and stared hard - in the far distance 5 springbok were walking towards it. It took half an hour for them to reach the cheetah. They walked straight past it and at no time did the cheetah try to hide. The minute they were past the cheetah and had their backs to it, the cheetah charged. The cheetah must have run for 100m before the springbok realised it was there and it killed one 25m from the car!!! Ironically 15 mins later we saw a springbok being born!!
Cheers Keith

Without trying to sound arrogant, I have been blessed with so much animal interaction, I don't know where to start.
4 fish eagles fighting over a fish one had caught,
A Burchell's coucal killing a chameleon a foot in front of the Matambeni hide.
A white rhino chasing off a martial eagle from a waterhole,
Umpteen other kills, stalks, standoffs and chases.

Yep! And yes, the story seems to have gone to digital heaven, so...

You all know weavers, they look like this on the nest:

Now you can see the dangers of all those 'ropes', if you don't watch out you get this effect...

Image

Now a smart thing to do! And when there are predators around you are in real trouble. And there was!

Image

So this is what happens..

(The story ended well, the Shikra didn't get him, but I bet the birdie has some sore spots, and a slightly raised heartbeat!)

Oh, forgot... I saw a leopard kill, nicely close-up on a nightdrive, but that's such an old story....
