Go through the town of Malelane (where shopping for groceries can be done at either the Pick 'n pay on your
left or the Spar on your right at the 1st traffic lights)

Swap the left and right directions! Spar butchery is very accommodating and will happily freeze and vacuum pack meat in whatever portions you want.

You will need to get onto the N1 north and follow the signs to Pretoria. Stay on the N1 as it goes around Pretoria till you see the signs to the N4 east eMhalalheni Stay on the N4 till it joins the N12 just outside eMalhaleni and follow the above instructions This is assuming you are going to the Southern gates?
If not stay on the N1 north and follow the directions in a much earlier post (2008 I think) nothing much has changed around Polokwane area

I use viamichelin.co.uk for planning road trips - both here in SA and overseas. A very comprehensive and useful site.

Hi all

Going to be landing at OR in early Novermber (Monday am) and doing the drive to Phalabowra. We have done the route before about 3 yrs ago. Are there any problems along the way that we need to bear in mind??

Many thanks

Mike and Trish Goss

I assume you will be going to turn off at Belfast and then go Dullstroom, Lydenburg, Orighstad to Phalaborwa. If so no problems, just watch for potholes, not too bad, Lydenburg to the tunnel. Stop in Lydenburg at Bakgat biltong for some of the best beef biltong available and have a great trip.

I think it is better to go via Polokwane - Giyani - Punda gate. We did this about 3 weeks back and apart from 1 or 2 stop - go's it was good.

How long should I expect it to take to drive from OR Tambo to Lydenburg and the on to Phalaborwa gate? We want to try and see the Taita Falcon on the way to Kruger. Are the roads good and safe? We have travelled to Kruger thru Nelspruit a number of times and also up the N1 through Polokwane to Phalaborwa, but have never taken this route. We will be driving midweek, leaving the Airport by 8AM at the latest.

Hi All,

PJW's suggestion is the best I have seen so far - some things to note

Numbi gate is not suggested for overseas visitors - most especially early in the morning and later in the day - one also has to be aware when there are likely to be protests in the area - these are frequent and unannounced

The road through Bushbuckridge is ok and the road is good - just don't speed and suggestions are do not use that road late on weekend days - lots of partying people on that route.

The best routes in for overseas visitors are Malalane, Crocodile Bridge and Phabeni - Kruger gate is ok but as suggested earlier it takes as long to get to Paul Kruger gate and Skukuza inside (Phabeni Gate) the park as it does outside the park. (better have the chance of seeing some animals)

One other warning - please note the Mpumalanga drivers are NOT GOOD drivers - there is total disregard for white lines, yellow lines and speed limits - so please be carefull.

Hey KC, if I may ask, from where do you hail? :D :D

Your post seems it comes from an overseas info page.

I particularly like this one. 8)
