Hi Scipio,

I used to live in JHB and travel to KNP and Sabi Sands from there - last year I spent a year in Maputo - much nearer but strangely went to Natal parks whilst there and Phinda in particular.

At the beginning of the year moved to White River - and now live in Hazyview work with the local community.

KP is only 10 k's from my house (Phabeni Gate) I have been to KP many times in the last years and about 10 times this year so far

I know the area quite well and get a lot of up to date info from the locals so I am happy to pass that on.

Enjoy the KNP

The roads were good in August. The only bad stretch was around Belfast and in the Lydenburg CBD where you will be doing 50km/h max anyway. There is one pot-hole/pot crater around Abel Erasmus pass, but the rest of the journey to Phalaborwa is a breeze.

I like Lydenburg area as a stopover, but I think the town needs a lick of paint - especially the CBD.

Location: Germiston but always thinking about the bush.
Have just booked camping at Pretoriuskop for November and then read the posts about stonings along road to Numbi :(

I read the post about it being OK to go via Phabeni, but the R538 goes through quite a few rural settlements. Does anyone have a recent update on the situation via Phabeni?

Thanks Annetta

Balthazar the Numbi road is the least favoured by the local visitors to the park - Phabeni being the more popular route amongst the people I know

Having said that if you use the R538 it is best done in the early morning - late evenings and weekend evenings are not good times. Also be carefull of potholes and regretfully I must add taxis

The situation is quite mercurial - the protests are mainly about service delivery with water being the main one

Sadly these things can develop within hours - earlier in the year I was on the way into Numbi and spotted fires across the road - I turned the car round and as I was pulling off several locals came running at me in what I perceived a very threatening attitude - thankfully they got out of the way as sped off.

Cars have been stoned so rather travel the extra 15 odd kilometres and go in a Phabeni.

Kicker Cat, can you please help? I will be travelling from Midrand to Pretoria to take the N4, plan to take the Schoemanskloof route to Crocodile bridge. I have a booking at Lower Sabie on Friday, 11 January.

I have meetings in Midrand till 11:00 and hope to be out of the office by 11:30. How long is the drive from Pretoria to Crocodile bridge gate?

Hi ElsabedB. I live in Kyalami and can get to Crocodile Bridge gate in about 5 -5.5 hours. The N4 is a super road, now all the roadworks are finished. Schoemanskloof is a good option - fewer slow trucks and more passing places.

Thanks for the reply Hippotragus. Do you also drive to Pta and then take the N4?

Hi ElsabedB - yes, we go from Kyalami through Crowthorne on the R55, past Olievenhoutbosch township and on to the N14, then past Pretoria on the Polokwane road (N1? - haven't got map in front of me) on to the N4 at the Proofplaas intersection.

There are roadworks just outside Nelspruit that slow you down by about 20 min and the highway that goes around Nelspruit is single lane so if you meet slow moving traffic it will slow you down quite a bit
