Being in the middle of a "mega-herd" can be an awesome experience !

I had the opportunity of seeing one of those in August 2007.This was on the H1-4 between Satara-Olifants.

In my estimation there must have been close to 800 buffalo. They were crossing the road from the west side and were headed towards the Ngotso Dam.As is typical with your best sightings, it was coming on close to the time when I needed to be back at camp. Spent the hour between 5-6pm witnessing this spectacle.

A memory that will stay with me for a long time.

Some great sightings my on this thread.

 I was sitting by myself on the veiwing platform @ Malelane Lodge for about and hour just checking out some egyptian geese on the croc river,,,nothing really exciting was going on and then all of a sudden there were dust clouds rising into the air and this huge black blur appeared,,,,about 200 buff came trudging down to the river,,,,,it was spectacular......

I'll ask them DB - seen the video already but not photos yet. 7 different sightings of lions  incl on S100 route - I told them to go that route after seeing your report, 3 leopard sightings  , lots of birds of all sizes, ellies, rhino, hyena, etc, but no cheetah or wilddog. Very cold at Tamboti at night and said it was so dry and dusty.

In 2006, along the Mahonie Loop by Punda.....We watched a heard come over a hill for 3 hours....I stopped counting/guess-timating at over 800  I've got some photos, to put up when Photo bucket decides to work......I spoke to one of the camp managers, and there Is supposedly a heard of 900+ that moves between Punda and Shingwetsi.......The heard we saw, most probably being that one :D

Often seen heards around 100 up to maybe 300/400 strong.....But this was something special, our car was swamped with Wild Cows, as they came to drink at the smallest of rain puddles right next to the road!!! :D

Around Shingwedzi we've seen several times big big herds of buff's. Once maybe more than 1000. That was really a great sighting. They crossed the mainroad and I can tell you... we had to wait a long time because as usual they were not in a hurry. But last week we were on the road between Lower Sabie and Skukuza when 2 buff's came out of the bush and crossed the road to the river. As a joke a said to my wife "I hope it not a herd of 1000 buff's".....
But we stopped counting. It must be 6 or 700 or maybe more. It is so difficult to guess howmany buffalo's crossed the road. It was very impressive :cam:

They stampeded before I could attempt an estimate , by then I had become nervous of the 70 strong elephant herd that seemed to be encircling me .

HI All,
We have just returned from Kruger (end of August). We saw very big heards, (5 times ) & definitely not the same ones, all in the south. Anything from 500 +.The biggest we saw was looking towards Mozambique from the sand road coming back from Mhlondozi picnic site. The long line went on & on.We filmed it with our :cam: video camera & viewing it 2 nights ago, the heard was a + - 1000. It was the biggest we have ever seen & I have seen some very big heards in KP. :D
