In April we saw a herd of 300 or so around the Satara area.
It was magnificent being in the middle of such a big herd.
The noise was incredible this was the largest herd we have seen :D

We saw the same Buffalo herd that Saraf saw, previous page, just north of LS on the other side of the Sabie river and the day we were sitting watching them, something spooked them and the whole herd started running, creating a huge dust cloud over them and the whole area.
What an amazing sight. :D

We have also seen another really huge herd on the S28, it was difficult to judge how many animals there were but they were on either side of the road and deep into the bush for a good few kilometres.

I have heard of big herds of buf. in KNP. I've read about herds up to 600 head. Is it true? If yes, I would like to know we to look for them?

Like everything else tv, luck plays a big part.

I have seen many herds of 300+, in the following areas in the last 10 years or so

Pkop - Skuk tar road
At elephant waterhole
At Siliolweni dam (twice)
From Nkumbe view site
Near Muntshe
Near Muzanzeni
Crossing the H7 (twice)

Just recently learnt about the lion following advice, and will wait a few miutes next time.

The biggest buffalo herd scientifically counted in the modern era, using helicopter slides studied under microscope during the annual census, was 1500 near Tshokwane in 1978!

The fact that they had to round it off despite all the technology tells you how difficult it must have been to count! 8)

SANPARKS said it seemed herds had joined into one, for some reason...

In general I would say your best chance of seeing "mega herds" would be the Tshokwane-Lower Sabie-Crocodile Bridge transect.

My own biggest herd that we could actually count reasonably well, was at Grootvlei Dam, Southeast of Shingwedzi, in July 1988.

They came down to drink in well-organised groups, and we counted 426, give or take a dozen or so!

We had a great experience with a big herd at Lamont waterhole just north of Shingwedzi. All to be revealed in my TR. :)

In September 2007 we came across a big herd near Nsemani(?) waterhole. It was really amazing how many buffaloes kept popping out the bushes. All those different shades of brown and black really made a beautiful mosaic.

Hi all
we have twice seen large buffalo herds around Satara- each of about 500-600
This June we saw 500+ along S28.
Brilliant sight!

This was a herd we saw at The Hippo Pools in July....look carefully and you'll see some lions that we were watching before the dust cloud formed and the buff emerged. Was an awesome 2hrs we spent at Hippo Pools....a lot of interaction and later an elephant came down to drink while both lion and buff were still milling around.
