Hello,
We will soon be making our 3rd trip to Kruger and will be coming from the United States. On previous trips we tried getting prior approval through our USA phone company so that my iPhone would work in South Africa but it never did work. On our last trip I purchased a basic MTM phone which was good for phone calls only. Does anyone know if I can purchase a South Africa SIM card for my iPhone for use while in country? If so, will I have access to the internet? What do data plans cost? I understand that WiFi is sold at a premium from inside the camps. Any information you give me will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Not sure about getting an iPhone SIM card as you'd have to unlock it. You can buy a 3G dongle from the Vodacom shop in OR Tambo airport, if you are bringing a laptop. Or I believe you can rent a phone from them.

3G coverage is patchy in the park, especially in the north. The best camps seem to be Lower Sabie, Skukuza or Satara.

There used to be a couple of internet cafes in the southern camps but last time I was there the Skukuza one had closed. Not heard of wifi being offered at all, but it has been a couple of years since I was there.

For me, data roaming outside Europe is prohibitively expensive so I just have my iPhone for emergencies. I find it extremely liberating.

Info I posted a while back that might be helpful PeteTuba:

A nano sim is good - its the one that fits the iPhone 5.

Most US phones are locked to a network though so you can't use them on another mobile network, so check if this is the case. There are two kinds of mobile networks: GSM and CDMA. S.A.'s are all GSM, but US has some GSM and some CDMA and some devices can only work on one and not the other. So if you are on CDMA here (US) it might not work in SA.

You might be well aware of the above, if not, I hope it is helpful.

Pay as you go data prices for Vodacom :
250MB - R59
500MB - R99
1GB - R149

Saraf is correct, there is no 'wifi' really in the park, as in hot spots etc. Best bet if you do need to connect to the internet is to set yourself up either with a laptop and dongle, or use a smartphone.

And have lots of patience - sometimes the speed/connection is ok, other times ... well you are in the African bush

PS to above:

I have just checked with my son, as they use their iPhones when coming to SA.

We phoned our network and they unlocked the phone for us.

Link to Vodacom - You can purchase a SIM or rent a phone (with charger). There are data packages available.
You pick-up @ the airport (JNB/CPT).
They email you your new SA phone number 2 weeks before you depart for your trip.

Thank you for this information. It's a big help. I realize that once we're out of the camp areas cell coverage is minimal but it's good to be able to check emails, etc. Thanks again,
Pete
