While on the topic of insurance - what about medical insurance? My plan covers me for overseas travel so I don't think it's a concern, but that's another thought for when traveling out of our own countries.

jhawktx,
Glad you got all of your answers. I looked up my coverage (American Express) and it just says "public roads". Think I am safe with that. I am quite comfortable with "just saying no" to the rental company's coverage. :D

Another important thing to note. All of the credit card coverages that I have seen say that you MUST deny any of the coverage offered by the rental company. If you accept their coverage, the card coverage vanishes. I know there are some companies that insist on you accepting their coverage - they do not give you a choice.

Again, I want to remind people to check on how long they are covered. My AE gives me 31 days.

Soooo, now what shall we worry about? :D

I think before any South Africans or Europeans get shouting about taking insurance, it seems like the USA credit cards offer the same insurance as you would obtain by taking out from the rental company. It makes for really interesting reading about the coverage available to a card holder.

Hello everybody. I'm new in the Forum. I've a question for more experienced people in sanparks.
I wan't to know if it's possible to rent a car in Kruger and also a 4x4 in Kaglagadi and if someone have an idea about the costs of doing it.

I'm planning to go for a week or 10 days but a I've not much money so I must to be sure about this kind of thing.

Sorry if I made some mystake with my English. I'm a spanish speaker and I do not practice my english frequently.

Thank you very much.

Actually Avis do have an office at Skukuza. How you get to Skukuza to hire a car there has always baffled me.

I think that office is more for helping out clients in the park. Breakdowns etc do occur. Madach has called them several times.

As mentioned above you cant rent a car in the park itself.
In the few times I visited, I arrived at Nelspruit airport KMIA (about 60km from the park) and rented a car there - its very easy and convenient.

I used the "first car rental" or (something like that) and was very pleased...

Hi Federal & welcome.
The Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport is halfway between Nelspruit and White River.
All the major car rental companies are there. ie Avis, Budget, Eurocar etc. so you won't have a problem getting a car.
What camp are you staying in for your first night?
I'm pretty sure you would be able to get a 4X4 in Upington which is your jumping off point for the Kgalagadi.

In fact in my first time in SA, I rented the car by Europcar from home.
(I travel alone. What should i do if a i have to change a tyre :hmz: )

KMIA, another option.
Pretty good for me.
I think that I will enter KNP trough the south, by Numbi Gate and stay 2 day at LS
Then I want to move to the central region, 2 to 3 days in Satara, and if possible far north up to Shingwedzi. Then, move back to the south leaving the paradise by Numbi again.

Hi Federal and Welcome!
I notice that you say that you are traveling alone and I'd just like to mention that the cost of a 4x4 for a single person is IMO not worth the expense — a 4x4 rental is 3 or 4 times as costly as renting a sedan.
A 4x4, altho many prefer it, is also NOT necessary for KTP, (Kgaligadi.)
I have always visited in a sedan — Toyota Corolla in 1992, VW Polo in 2007, Ford Fiesta in 2010.
I highly recommend Avis at the Upington airport (the manager there is Elmarie).
Another option that I've used often is the consolidator AutoEurope, which might be a good choice for you.

Can someone advise me on the following: Our Game Park and Camping car is a Merc Unimog which we would use to access places like Selous, Ngorogoro etc. Although it is considered a truck, it is hardly larger in size than your average Bakkie, although it is higher. It is as quiet as your diesel cars are. It weighs in at 3900kg. There is a rule regarding vehicles that can carry over 4000kg not being able to travel on gravel roads. Does this rule apply to our Unimog? (bearing in mind landcruisers, F250 and some of the vans eg nissan interstar, some sprinters etc do have the same weight carrying capacities) I understand why 50 plus seating busses and big trucks may hassle other visitors but we, in our Unimog wouldnt/dont.
