We've had minor niggles with Europcar in the past but nothing to put us off going to them again. It's mainly been that the car we have ordered was not available but that then works in our favour as we get an upgrade. They normally try to get us to return the vehicle when the ordered one is ready, but they forget to phone us to arrange the swap so we have the upgrade for the whole time. We once had a minibus for the price of an Avanza and and a single cab bakkie for the price of an X-trail.

They will try to sell you extra insurance so watch what you sign for when you pick the car up, unless of course you need it.

We rented via Europcar from Hoedspruit and had a good experience. Us too were upgraded for free when our X-Trail wasn't available - we were bumped up to a full sized Toyota pickup.

This last trip we used Hertz in Nelspruit and were surprised to find that they gave us the cheapest rate for a Kia Sportage automatic. I like Hertz, but don't usually use them overseas for the whole price reason. :)

Good luck!

We have never rented "direct" from the rental company, we have always used one of the so called "factors" who have always worked out to be cheaper than the published fares.
Our October trip has us in an Xtrail, from Budget, but we have ordered the car through auto-europe.co.uk/

Good luck and have a great trip

Mike

We used Eurocar on our trip in May. We had no problems at all superb service in fact. They helped with everything as we took car through Swazi.

Thank you all for your responses. I feel much more informed to make a great decision on my rental car and save myself a boatload of $$$.

I am so thrilled about this trip. As many times as I have been to Kruger - eight and for a foreigner I think that's a lot - I have never stayed at any bush camps. This trip Tamboti, Shimuwini and Sirheni are booked along with my favorites; a luxury tent in both Lower Sabie and Punda Maria. I can't wait!!!

Thank you again for your help.

I've also used Auto Europe -- this consolidator is actually based in Portland, Maine  (the US URL is autoeurope.com) -- in the past and recommend them. You should certainly at least check their rates before making your final decision.

I have rented through Europecar a few times.
Never had a problem. In fact, the one time I had booked the wrong class of car, my mistake, and they were very happy to sort it out. I guess the pick up was Jhb Int so there were a few spare cars available.

Used Avis once - very expensive

Used Thrifty this past trip, and found them very helptful too.

I always use Thrifty at KMIA as I find them cheapest OVERALL. There is cheaper websites but then the excess is much more and I rather pay a little extra and have a lesser excess, if something does happen. One must really compare the fine print properly to see what is the best value for money. I have done this exercise in detail about 5 weeks ago.

Thrifty at KMIA offer great service. I once even forgot my drivers license. As I had booked with them a few times before they still gave me a hire car as they had my details on the computer. I found this excellent service and don't think another hire agency would have done the same.

Thrifty first choice for me.

Dear forumites, I am very happy to return to Kruger in February next year. I have been so enthousiastic about my previous visit that our friends want to join this time. This makes 3 couples, 6 adults in total, and we like the idea of sharing one minibus to be able to share our experiences when driving through the park. We could rent a VW Kombi or Hyundai H1 which are meant for 8 people max. However, I have serious doubts whether those sitting in the back will have a good view. So, perhaps it would be better to rent two, or even 3, smaller cars but then our company will be divided and this seems less fun. Any of you have experience with this? I would really appreciate your advise.

Hi lucbo,
I agree that dividing the touring party can take away quite a bit of the fun.
We went with a H1 to the Kruger last year and the view from the back seat is not bad at all. It obliviously is not as good as the two front rows but definitely worth it.

It is strange how people have such different experiences with different companies. I've found Avis in Joburg cheap and efficient, although perhaps other companies do better deals on bigger cars? We always hire something little for the two of us, like a VW Polo..

Thanks PietSkiet. I'm worried about the rear windows that can't open. Don't you miss a lot of the experience when you behind closed windows?

Every vehicle has pros and cons and therefore your decision will be a compromise.
Every seat has a different view whether mobile or static.
Always think positively - how can I make this work.
One way is to regularly change seats, particularly driver and front seat passenger.
You can decide the various duties (driver, navigator, photographer, spotter) at whatever interval you wish.
Each person can also have a choice on where the group is going on a particular day or part of a day.
What the group is going to eat and where.
This is just a few examples of how to insure that everyone in the group is included and valued.
It is not rocket science, just good people management.
Just my thoughts
Enjoy your trip - all of you!
JDW

You beat me to it JDW..............I was about to say the same thing as you.

Just change positions in the vehicle, so everyone gets a chance at the best/worst seats.

Also include everyone in the planning.

Hope you have a wonderful trip Lucbo.
