Looked into this previously. To ensure you hire a car with a tow bar you have to go through a specialist rental place, same for hiring a trailer. Both of which make it more expensive. Also coming from the UK it's more difficult to source those types of rentals.

We can hire a little car really cheaply.

Would be open to getting any contact of people who will hire this sort of equipment cheaply in the J'burg area.

Thanks

I would say an extra car is not necessary.

I have hired an X-Trail in the past and there is plenty of space.
I have also hired a Toyota Fortuna which is even bigger, so maybe consider that?

Hi Gemma T

I am not sure they will charge you any extra for an extra car. We have been camping once where we visited people so we had two cars at the camp site and there was no charge. We just try to stop the second car so that it was in no ones way even leaving it one night at the extra parking there where you get together for the night drive.

Enjoy your trip

Thanks Yoda, but if there's 4 of us we will definitely need an extra car...as we've had to use half the backseat previously when there were 3 of us.

I'm awaiting a response from reservations to let me know how much they will charge.

Thanks

Hi Gemma

We have camped with 2 cars on a couple occasions. We have always clearly stated that we have two cars and as such have 2 permits but we have never been charged anything.

We camped last week in Satara with an extra vehicle on the site and the charge was R 15 per night extra. It very tricky for the camps to police this so they rely on honesty.

Hi.

I think you have a good idea. Although I have driven the X Trail for many years and never had space problem but I never camped so i might not know much.

But your plan seems perfect of hiring 2 cars, always worthwhile just in case a few people want to stay asleep in the morning.

Hallo everybody

Thanks to the advice received here, we had a wonderful camping experience @ Skukuza.
We were fortunate enough to set up in the camping area just below safari tents 304 - 306. This is near the camp kitchen as well as ablutions and laundry.
The bathrooms were perfect - spacious, practical and always clean! We also had hot water at all times.
Power and water outlets are well spaced, but all sites did not have braai stands. It did look like they were in the process of "planting" new braai stands to all sites.
Standard black plastic as well as baboon-proof dustbins were available and cleaned daily together with the braai stands.
The camp kitchen also had no shortage of hot water for dishes and the boiling water on tap was so convenient, we never even used our own kettle.
We did not meet a lot of people @ the camp kitchen, it looks like most people does the dishes @ their campsites now as they are better equipped, or maybe it was because the camping area was very quiet despite the fact that it was fully booked according to reservations when we wanted to add another night to our stay!

Adding sightings such as leopard, wild dog, lion on a kill and ringed ground hornbill parents killing a snake to feed a chick to a perfect stay, and you have a perfect Kruger holiday!

Not too sure about the fee but it is not a lot.

Why don't you rather rent a trailer than an additional car? It will work out a lot cheaper and everyone can travel together. (X-trail has more than enough space for 4 adults).

Going rate for normal luggage trailers is a lot cheaper than an extra car...

Really good advice. Also when camping a trailer is a big plus as it can be used as a storage locker at the camp site and usually the extra packing space is appreciated.
