Hi All

First time on the Forums :)
We have been to Kurger before - the last time in 2011 and we are due in the park next week for appox 1 month.

Are the sightings' boards still being used in the camps as we have found them very useful in the past in locating the animals in the general area given. They have been brilliant in finding the wild dogs over a period of a couple of days giving a general direction that they are travelling and we have had some fab sightings because of it but also a lot of luck. Luckily for us, we have had the time to spend looking for them too.

Any info regarding the sighting boards in the camps - or the lack of them - would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Do you believe the sightings boards or do people lie to lead you away from where the animals really are? :D :D

Will be interesting to get others´ view on this one. I personally enjoy looking at the sightings boards….but expressly head the opposite direction to all stated sightings!!

I think they are mostly accurate. But remember - the visitor sees something, drives for another 5 hours or so, gets back to camp and only then puts the marker on the map. By that time, unless it is lions on a kill, the animal/s is/are most likely to have moved - in some cases quite far.

The sightings boards do give a rough idea of what is in an area, but cannot be 100% perfect.

:hmz: I watched a group of children posting their sightings at Satara one day. The Tibavati picnic area showed eight lion sightings, six Leopards along with several wild dog, Cheetah and Elephant sightings. :sup: Wouldn't you know it! I had gone to S100 and Nwanetsi and seen only a few Lions and Cheetah all day Image

I once saw a leopard stalking a buffalo on a sightings board

yes, they are still there but as result of our most recent trip I'd say in those camps we visited (CRO, SKU; SAT and LOW) they are poorly "maintained" by staff - on half of the days we checked the stickers for "yesterday" and "today" had not been switched by 10 am, meaning that people who posted before 10 am were essentially adding pins to the sightings of the day before...up in Satara people who did not know the difference were pinning wild dogs magnets after they had indeed spotted hyenas (one SANParks guide told us that he had not seen wild dogs in Satara since last march)

Although the sightings boards are a great place to start a conversation with other visitors, you musn't totally rely one the accuracy.

Many of the animals are constantly on the move, and it is very rare that you might actually get to view the same pride or herd that other visitors have seen. I also think that people get easily confused when it comes by identifying whether it is a leopard or cheetah they have seen.

Still a nice conversation starter though.
