Re: Latest arrival at MQP ?

For what it is worth, a recent trip, arrived at Nelspruit apt, picked up car and left at 12.30hrs for Satara.
Travelled along the outside of the park, entered at Orpen and arrived at Satara at 1630, Olifants is about 70km further and you should make it before the gate closing of 18.30 hrs. in Dec, provided you are not ambushed by sightings.

Advice on driving route from Nelspruit Airport to Mopani

Unread postby eugtoh » Fri Feb 27, 2009 6:04 pm

Need help guys, I'm helping my colleagues plan our stay at Mopani. I have a total of 46 pax, and we'll be renting 12 cars from the airport and drive all the way to Mopani.

Is it advisable to enter through Phalaborwa gate? If so, which route do i take and the approx time for the journey?

Also, if we intend to do a BBQ at Mopani, where can we purchase the food for the BBQ? Is there a supermarket in Mopani?

Last question, which are good driving routes from Mopani camp in Kruger? And what animals frequent Mopani?

Sorry to ask so many questions at a go, but really excited but pretty stressed out with the planning too... :)

Hi eugtoh and welcome to the forum!!

Wow, you are a large group and that should be great.

From Nelspruit airport I would drive the R40 road from Nelspruit to Phalaborwa. That is about 250 kilometers and should take about 3 and a half hours.

The route (R40) is as follows: Nelspruit-White River-Hazyview-Klaserie-Hoedspruit-Mica-Phalaborwa. From Phalaborwa to Mopani it's another 75 kilometers and will take about another 2 to 2 and a half hours.

I would stop in Phalaborwa at a Supermarket and buy the food there!!

Enjoy your trip. :D

Re: Distance from KMIA to Lower Sabie via Kruger Gate

Hi Jeanne,

This from the SANPARKS site:

Airport access to the Kruger National Park

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA)
* Situated between Nelspruit and White River
* 22 km from Nelspruit
* 15 km from White River

Paul Kruger Gate
* 108 km from Nelspruit on R40
* 87 km from White River on R40
* 41 km from Hazyview on R536

Kruger Gate to Lower Sabie is 53Km and the site estimates

should give you an idea, BUT will the plane be on time? Does
seem like going via White River is the way to do it. Do not
know where Riverside Mall is located.

Enjoy the trip. I'm starting to plan for a visit in March/April

Hi Jeanne.
I'm staying in White River and would recommend P&P in Hazyview because it is next to the road you had to travel and it is much bigger than the one in White River.
You can manage to get to Lower Sabie in that time even if your flight is delayed with half an hour.
From KMIA it's about 40min drive to Hazyview and another 30min drive to Kruger gate.
From there you can reach Lower Sabie in under 2 hours but don't stop for too much.
20 min. from the nearest gate! I think the Park is calling. Again.

Hi Jeanne,
I stay in White River and the Pick 'n Pay is basically in the main road entering White River.
It's a clean store and stocks all the basics.
There is also a liquor store at the same shopping centre.
Like Bouts777 says, it's about 40min to Hazyview and another 30+ to Kruger Gate. (Keep to the speed limit especially on the Hazyview to Kruger Gate road, you don't want to spend extra time for speeding fines  )
Entering the Kruger Gate it takes about another 2 hours depending obviously on what you see on your way to Lower Sabie.

Hi amyhogge, the Riverside Mall is on the R40 Main Road towards White River, and yes they do have a very nice Woolworths and Pick 'n Pay.

Our first night is at Berg & Dal, but our last night will be at Olifants, then we would need to make the 14:45 flight out of KMIA.
Would it take WAY too long to drive back down through the Park? What would be the quickest way to go?
Also, one connection gives us an hour and a half at OR Tambo, would this be long enough to clear customs etc?
We would be flying in from London, we are US citizens.
Once I get our flights all lined up I can start drooling over the sightings topics in this forum...

Olifants to KMIA is doable in that time scale as long as you get out as soon as the gate opens, stick to the tar roads, keep to 40-50kph and don't linger over sightings.
I think the best gate to leave by would be Paul Kruger.
If you don't fancy that then try to swap to Skukuza, Lower Sabie or even Satara.
The one thing in your favour is that KMIA is a small airport and fairly efficient so you can get there pretty close to your flight time without having to worry about queuing.

You don't say which way the connection is that's 1 1/2 hours. If it's London/-Jhb/KMIA then I would suggest that one of you takes all the hand luggage and the other hotfoots it to passport control to get a place in the queue.
But you should be OK.
If it's the other way around then you and your baggage will be checked through at KMIA and you won't need to check-in but don't linger.

Phalaborwa or KMIA

Unread postby don » Wed Dec 02, 2009 7:49 pm

We are anxiously awaiting our return to Kruger this summer. Normally we fly from JNB to KMIA and enter the park in the South. But, this time our first accommodations are in Mopani so we are thinking about flying from JNB to Phalaborwa instead and picking our rental car there. Is there any reason this is not a good idea? Many thanks for any help.

Don, no reason not to do it this way, except that the JHB-Phala flight is the most expensive in the country.

Also check Hoedspruit airport as an option. Close to Orpen gate.

Best Route from KMIA to Numbi

Unread postby bert » Tue Jan 26, 2010 9:01 pm

Hello Bert,
fairly new to this game.Hope you can help me out.
I am travelling to Pretoriuskop in mid March from KMIA.
Somehow,i managed to find a forum site re travelling by road
to the park.It was all about the roadworks at Nelspruit on the R40.Amazingly,i managed to exit the site and can now not find it again.
Looking at a road map on line,i was thinking of travelling up
the R538 to Numbi Gate, avoiding Nelspruit and White River.
Is this an acceptable route as i did not see any mention of it on the site i was reading?
Many thanks

Mites, please help Bean46

Hi Bean46

There is a fairly short route from the airport to Numbi Gate through the town of White River.
Have a look at This Map
Hope it helps, otherwise please do ask for more info.

Hi Bean 46

No knowing your destination in KNP or the time of day you will travel I would like suggest a slightly different route

My suggestion is to take the road through White River and then the R40 to Hazeyview and then into Kruger park using the Phabeni Gate.

The road to Numbi is not that bad but the traffic and the road users make using this road quite hazourdous IMO

I hadn't used this road for about two years and following another forumites suggestion used it last year - the drivers on this road have their own Rules - which deteriorate drastically during busy times. I won't use it again

Just be wary of the local Taxis

Enjoy your trip to KNP

I agree with Kickercat ,

Not really a nice road to drive , the road is nice but the drivers
I was always at 50 , 60 km/h no more ...Every time, it is at you to take care , the others don't ( specially the taxi pick up , go slow when you see one stopped on the side of the road ...)
You need 6 eyes to drive there
I had no problems on the other roads at all .
Yes , other roads are a lot nicer , specially the R40 , and Hazyview is easy to go through .
From , KMIA , turn right , go through White -River , about less than one hour for Hazyview and after only 10 km to Phabeni .
The road from KMIA to Malelane is also very nice .
