driving time-MQP to skukuza

Unread postby Blanca10 » Sat Jul 21, 2012 9:20 pm

I am trying to find the distance and driving time from the Nelspruit airport (KMIA)
to Skukuza.
If we pick up our car about noon do we have time for some shopping
on route and still get to Skukuza if we enter via the Malelane gate?

Warm welcome to the forum Blanca10!

When is your planned trip as gate/camp times do vary from season to season?
otherwise it might be an idea to rather drive to White River or Hazyview to shop and enter at Phabeni or Kruger Gates if time is getting tight.

Well, that will help with the gates closing only at 6.30pm.

If you scroll down to Airports to Southern Regions at end of info, it refers to KMIA which is either 25 or 22 km (both given), from Nelspruit and then Malelane Gate which is 64 km from Nelspruit.
That should be possible in 1 hour or less on a good road.
Then in Kruger, Skukuza is 64 km from Malelane gate which is do-able in an hour and a half if you run late, but an ideal time would be 3 hours at game spotting speed of 20 to 25 km an hour.
That means if you stop on the way to Kruger to shop, you have an hour and a half to get most of your supplies from Nelspruit or Malelane.
There is a shopping thread you could check.
Hope this helps reassure you it should all work out

Hullo Alexmagda. I live in Nelspruit so let me try and give you the best advice & directions that I can. After leaving KMI Airport you will come to a traffic circle [b]R538 go round the circle take 2nd exit to White River. Go 2.5kms to T junction take slip road left and head for Rocky's Drift (road has no number) approx. 8kms Come to T junction take slip road left R40 to Nelspruit. Travel through small industrial area for approx. 10kms to Riverside Mall on your left and Grove Shopping Centre on your right. Beware of roadworks.Suggest you go to Pick & Pay or Checkers plus many other shops in Riverside Mall.
To get to Numbi Gate get back onto R40 and retrace through Rocky's Drift to White River. When entering town turn left at 1st traffic light and then right at next lights. Now follow road R40 to Hazyview. NB! I do not suggest you use the R538.The R40 is in excellent condition and far more scenic.Travel 53kms to T junction with R538.turn right to Numbi Gate.Travel 11kms to Numbi turn off on your left.Travel 8kms to Numbi Gate.Along this 19kms beware of animals on the road + potholes and SPEED TRAPS!!
I suggest you get a road map from the Avis counter when you arrive at KMIA. Good Luck and if you need help please feel free to contact me on 083 461 2080.

Hi All

I've booked the following accom for next year:

BnD- 1 night
Pkop- 4 nights
Olifants- 4 nights
LS- 4 nights :D

The reason I opted for one night at BnD was that we were going to fly to Joburg and drive to Kruger, entering at Malelane.

But to my absolute joy, we’ve just booked our flights direct to KMIA

So my question is this; we will land and have our car hire by 1pm hopefully, then we still need to do shopping and get to camp before closing time.
Should I stick with BnD and shop in Nelspruit or is it a better idea to shop in Whiteriver and enter through Numbi straight to Pkop?

I'm a little worried about time, which do you think is the best option?
I recently drove from Numbi to KMIA and I found that road to be about the most atrocious I've ever come across, but if it’s considerably quicker then maybe I’ll just have to face it again!

THANK YOU

Hi camken,

No need to shop in Nelspruit, travel directly from the airport to Malelane, where there are plenty of shopping opportunities and allow you to enter at Malelane gate and travel to B & D quite easily.

If you need more info then have a look at Shopping topic.

Gate closing varies according to the time of year so make sure you know what that time is, earliest being 5.30pm and latest 6.30pm in the Summer months.

Best route to Satara from Nelspruit airport

Unread postby lepages » Fri Apr 11, 2014 4:49 am

Can someone give us advise on the best route from Nelspruit airport to Satara? We arrive at 9:50 am and were hoping that there would be enough time to get to Satara. Should we drive up to orpen gate and enter there or would it be better to enter closer to hazyview and drive through the park?

Getting to Satara via Orpen gate will be no problem. The only other option would be to enter at Phabeni (near Hazyview). From there to Satara is 131 km. This should take about 5 hours (averaging just over 25 km/h). So it depends on how long you take to get from KMIA to Phabeni. If memory serves it is only about 70 km (take the R40)? My guess is that if you can get to Phabeni by 12:00, you will be OK to reach Satara before the gates close.

There is a large shopping centre in Hazyview (just where you have to turn off to go to Phabeni) if you need to buy any supplies on the way.

Thanks for the response. I guess it will all depend on how quickly we get out of the airport assuming that we arrive on time. Can you give me an idea of how long it would take to get to Phabeni and Paul Kruger Gates? This way I can make a decision when we are there.
