Most dangerous animal in KNP?

Unread postby Grantmissy » Thu Nov 11, 2010 10:19 am

After reading the article in the newspaper today of the hippopotamus that was darted by Researchers in Kruger and they mistaken it for being asleep I could not help but wonder which animal is the most dangerous in Kruger? I always thought Buffalo could be the most dangerous but after seeing the huge mouth of the hippo very close to one of the guys I think it is maybe the hippo?

They are known as one of the animals which kills most people throughout Africa.. but looking at KNP, I would probably say that the Leopard will win this one purely on the number of rangers/staff they have killed over the years or perhaps the Lions up north that wait for illegal immigrants.

Black mamba/Puff Adder/Boomslang etc?
Certain scorpions?

How about another one: the Anopheles Mosquito (more in Africa, not so much in Kruger specifically)

It is stated that the Hippo is responsible for the most human deaths by any animal in Africa. My personal belief is that Crocodile kill more people. My reason for this is that there is no evidence if a Croc kills a person but a Hippo will not eat the person leaving the remains behind. So the records show that Hippo kill the most people but I think a lot of deaths by Croc's go by unrecorded, just another missing person file opened with the police.

Thats easy....Homo Sapiens!

On a serious note don't write off Crocodiles! I know one was shot some years ago close to the Mozambique border and had clothes/watches, things like that in its stomach :hmz:

With Crocs, unlike the big land mammals, very little evidence is left behind after a human has been killed so I wonder how many people have fallen victim!?!!

It is actually one of the smallest animals, the mosquito.

Malaria kills around 2 million people per year, worldwide. No other animal even comes near that.

Its not the mosquito...the Mosquito is just the vector  ....bit like rats and the Bubonic plague....I wouldn't say rats are dangerous?? Although some people might tend to disagree

Still an animal...

And while it may be the vector, without it malaria would not exist.
What is more dangerous, the truck about to hit you, or the driver in it?

On my farm up in northern Moz, 5 people were taken by a crock, in the Lacunga River which borders one side of the farm, in one year, and 8 died from Malaria (mostly kids) in the same year (2008)

Interesting Question. I also would go for Malaria Mosquito (in this case I disagree with some Persons, but is jus a belive not a prove!). Apart from that, I would go to Predators, the reasons were already discussed.
life is Game, you rather play or flee. I chose to play the Game.

I would say for the most guests to Kruger, the most dangerous would be an elephant as they are prob the only animal that can harm you while in a car. So as long at guests stay in their vehicles, ellies are prob the biggest danger in my opinion....

Homo sapiens causes the most injuries (though not deaths) to humans within the KNP and singularly through its actions causes the most self inflicted casualties as well as the most animal deaths both directly & indirectly .

Food for thought ?
KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.

Human Beings.......by far the most dangerous animal in the park.

Lets ignore the Mosquito/Maleria question for a moment and look at the wildlife that could be dangerous. Hippo, Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard, Lion......in fact any wild animal can be dangerous if threatened or hungry. But they only are dangerous in these situations........

However, animals do not kill indiscriminately. Humans unfortunately do either through selfishness, negligence or greed. Humans speeding kill in the park, Poachers kill in the park, tourists who step out of their cars can kill in the park, even the scientists meant to protect kill in the park.....
