Amex?

Unread postby Travelstory » Mon Oct 28, 2013 6:56 pm

Can anyone tell me if the shops at the camps accept American Express? Just trying to get the finances organized for my upcoming trip...
Thank you!

Sorry, not sure but we have found Diners Club not widely accepted.
Best are VISA and MASTERCARD for South Africa.

Visa and Master Cards accepted at the shops, restaurants and at camp receptions.

Remember, Kruger is remote and sometimes things happen. To be safe, withdraw cash at the airport. As much as you feel safe to carry on you. In 2012 we had an exciting experience.
The GSM network was down for 3 days which resulted in no access to ATMs or card facilities. On the 3rd morning, I started getting texts on my phone, so I knew the network was up. We ran to reception/shops to draw money and buy food, other than cheese and bread and the power through the camp was down (We were stuck in camp cos ran out of petrol and only had money on our cards) We waited a further 5 hours till the power came up. Then there were massive lines to buy food, and at the ATMs. I think by the 3rd person after me the ATM was out of cash.

Now, after 8 visits to Kruger, that only happened once, but it can happen, so now we take as much cash as is safe to travel with.
September - Orpen, Talamati and Satara :P

I had trouble in the past withdrawing cash - had to exit the park to draw cash. My last trip to Kruger I had no problems at all. To be safe, take some cash with.

Garage card

Unread postby theunspos » Thu Nov 14, 2013 11:32 am

Do Kruger still only take garage cards for petrol? Or do the petrol stations take debit and credit cards now.
Is it the same for all sanparks like golden gate.

Thanks

theunspos - good question and will be good to know.

One thing I have learnt is always ensure you have a cash float going enough to cover for petrol etc. The lines migh just be off and you wil have a problem. :hmz:

Also ensure car always filled up as you never know with strikes looing :hmz:

These are some of my lessons learnt when in Kruger or any other place for that matter.

I have used my garage card in Kruger for many years now and everywhere else without a problem, unless the system is offline , you should have no problem
I once filled up in Satara and the system went offline, I signed on a piece of paper for the fuel and went back the next day to pay  Maybe I look like an honest fellow :D Actually I am :D

Personally I never take a card with me to the Park and just carry Cash as no matter what happens, Cash is accepted everywhere, so even if I want a quick shopping trip just before entering, it helps.

I am not sure about credit and debit cards, but Kruger normally is very reliable with regards to their systems, so hopefully you should not have a problem.

Hopefully another forumite may be able to assist you if garage cards are accepted or not.

The shops and filling stations took my debit card at Pretoriouskop and Skukuza in July.

Hi

I was in Kruger 2 weeks ago and used my credit card to buy fuel, no problem. On previous visits I have used a garage card.

At the filling station in Mopani last year they were unable to take any cards, so we had to turn the car upside down/inside out to find enough cash to pay, I had left my purse in the tent at Tsendze

Whenever I have been to the petrol station, they always tell me they can only take a garage card or cash....When I present my CC they say no, only Garage Cards.

Is this just down to mis-information that has been supplied to the petrol station attendants?

As far as I know, a card machine cannot tell the difference between a CC, Cheque Card and a Garage Card...in essence they are all the same surely.

I know that I can pay at any station in Gauteng with my credit or cheque card and it recognises the purchase as fuel.

It would be nice if Sanparks could give us some official information from their side?

We definitely used a CC for fuel this last trip in the park and I know Crested Val does regularly as well.
