Wish we could have stayed longer........

Unread postby naomi c » Tue Jun 01, 2010 2:04 pm

When my husband said he wanted to visit friends staying in Buffels Baai, I was not too keen at first, but then I had a brilliant idea - why not visit a few National Parks on the way down and on our way back home again?!
The holiday was extended from one week to two (last two weeks of April) and two nights each were booked at Mountain Zebra, Addo, Karoo and Mokala National Parks. All that the budget allowed was camping - so off we went with our rooftop tent fitted to the bakkie and a little gazebo.

First stop - Mountain Zebra National Park.

We did not really think about rain - we were mos going to the drier parts of our country and it was nearly winter. Major mistake! On our way to MZNP, somewhere near Middelburg, we drove through a massive thunderstorm.

I once again realised what an absolute beautiful country we have!

Arriving at MZNP it was still a bit overcast.

Very friendly personnel at the gate as well as reception.

The campsite was almost full, with quite a few sites closed off. While setting up the gazebo the clouds started looking ominous again. We were just about finished when the heavens opened up. We experienced the mother of all thunderstorms!! Both of us ended up, together with some of our luggage, in the front of the bakkie. There we waited for the storm to pass - we listened to a rugby game - the Lions against the Sharks I think. All part of the fun!
The next morning dawned clear and beautifull.

I went for a walk through the camp. Note the water still running over the boulders.

I ended up at the swimmingpool - stunning, don't you think!?

The scenery in MZNP is breathtaking - no photo can do it justice.

View from the campsite towards Kranskop Loop

Rooiplaat Loop takes you to the top of the plateau - the views are to die for.

Thanx to everyone who commented.
Have already noted that if the trip report is not about KNP, KTP or maybe Addo, it is not very popular. To us it is not about the "big five" - every Park is special in it's own way. So much to see and experience.
We saw an abundance of animals and birdlife in MZNP. We searched high and low for the cheetahs but had no luck in finding them. I desperately wanted to see a Black Rhino - have never seen one in the wild - but that was also not to be.
Because of the rain, the 4x4 routes were closed - a big disappointment to us. When we left on the Monday we again went to have a look if it has not been opened, but no luck!

Thank you again for the positive comments. MZNP is really worth a visit, I can assure you of that! And I will continue without further ado.

Our mammal list included:

eland (a big herd on the Kranskop Loop) but no photo oppotunities

Kudu

Image

Black Wildebeest - also camera shy

Gemsbok - very far off

Red Hartebeest - very willing to pose

As well as steenbok, blesbok and what we assumed were mountain reedbuck.
