If the stuff was bought at the camp shop then the juice would come in little containers which could be left lying around .. = pollution or an animal might eat it . the same goes for the food which might have come in prepacked polystyrene or plastic wrap.What is taken in must be taken away

Precisely what I had on mind !
I hope others read this as part of my anti litter campaign .

Our dear guide is walking with his group in the Crocodile Bridge area near the Vurhami river. It is rather bushy and the river is making a deep gully, which is covered by overhanging trees. It is mid summer and it is getting hot.

All the group wants to see is a white rhino. Our guide now has the option to look for a more open grassy area, or to head for the gully in search of rhino.

He decides to head for the gully.

Will he be successful in his search for a white rhino?

He is more likely to find a white rhino in an open grassy area , black rhino in a shady gully ... (he is quite likely to find trouble in the gully in the form of a black rhino)

... big trouble ...

Any more opinions?

In my opinion , he is potentially heading for big trouble .

Don't think he will find white rhino in a gully , more likely to run into a hippo or maybe even a herd of elephants heading back away from the river.

Personnally I would not want to be on this walk ......

Ndloti is absolutely correct with his assumption on my question. Taking general rhino behaviour in to account, our guide would head to the open area to see white rhino.

But .... and this is why I asked this question ... animals like to surprise us.

I have had a number of meetings with white rhino in shady gullies. I think they go there to sleep during the heat of the day because it is cooler and because the sand is nice and soft. They seem to enjoy sleeping there.

I have also seen WR lying down in shady, sandy areas a few times; and then of course wading in the shallow mud if some water is present there too.

Imberbe - looks like it could be the same place in Nape trails area where while observing two sleeping white rhino in an allmost identical setting , a genet jumped out of a bush a few feet from where we were standing and woke the sleeping rhino . I was a memorable sighting watching alerted rhino from a safe vantage point - they eventually relaxed and we were able to move off silently - a very quiet walking group !

Your trusted guides aproach a stream area with thick vegetation. The first rifle chambers a few rounds into his 30-06 Safari-de-lux, and tells his 2nd rifle to follow, but tells the group to stay put until they return. Would this be safe ?

Not safe. There may be a hippo on its way to the water and will surely attack if you are in its path. There may also be a couple of daggha boys sleeping in the shade, who will also attack if you stumble upon them. Lastly, what's the guide doing with 30-06 in the bush? he should carry at least a 375 or 458.

And on top of Rooies reply, would both guides ever leave the walkers alone?

Rooies There were a few errors in my scenario. Rounds are loaded before hand , and then only can one chamber a round , when absolutely necessary. The 30-06 is not a legal defence weapon for guides in Kruger, as Rooies pointed out .375 upwards would be
Leaving guests alone is not desirable, better to send the 2nd rifle to scout up ahead, whilst 1st stays with guests, or avoid the possible dangerous area altogether, if possible.
