I am not sure what answer you are looking for here Philip 1 :hmz: but I would say just pass by slowly or stand still until it walks away and then proceed. ??

Philip, you stand still and hope he doesn't turn and run. If not, then make sure you capture it on film to brag on this forum with. Basically, porcupines are no threat to humans; unless you're looking to de-quill it while alive and then you'd better make sure you're prick-proof.

"Back away from the porcupine but do not turn your back to it or try to run away. Turning away from the animal gives it the opportunity to attack when your attention is elsewhere. Run only as a last resort if the porcupine will not be scared into going away. Grab a stick or anything you can swing and hit the porcupine across the snout hard enough to stun it. If you hit with moderate force, you will sting but not severely hurt the porcupine. This is usually enough to cause the porcupine to run away".

Over to anyone for a question.

I suspect that this person do not know too much about porcupines, at least not about our porcupines. I have never heard about a porcupine running after a person to "attack" the person, nor of a porcupine "attacking" a person with his nose facing the person.:hmz:

Any way ... question.

When approached (not charged) by an elephant while on foot you should lower you body position, even sitting down on your haunches.

Is this true? If so, why. If not, why not?

Though I haven't yet had the privilege of having an elephant approaching me while on foot, I suspect that lowering one's body position to a curious elephant makes sense. Elephants mostly become aggressive and charge when their efforts to intimidate you fail and when they feel threatened. Lowering one's height must lower one's threat to that massive animal, and I have seen on several videos where experienced guides did exactly that when watching elephants.

I watched the show on TV, called "Long way down." Charlie Boorman and his friend visited the Okavango and there they were advised to stand tall, wave your arms and shout at the elephant. But whatever the correct thing to do is, I don't want to do the experiment.

Correct OWN.

The human figure is quite strange to the bush and poses a natural threat as it is associated with an age old enemy and hunter.

Lowering you body posture creates a less threatening image.

UNDER THE CORRECT CIRCUMSTANCES this may actually convey a message which the animal may interpret correctly as non threatening. Many animals have been shown to react positively in such situations.

It is key that the guide should judge the circumstances and act accordingly. Good knowledge of animal behaviour and communication is extremely important. It should also be done in such a way that it does not pose a threat to the safety of the guests nor the animal.

Lowering of the posture is a technique often used in the bush.

You are IT!
