Phokojwe, nice Q. A hint though: don't give a clue too quickly - let us work at it a bit.

Phokojwe, is it the black-bellied korhaan that you're talking about?

Thanks Phokojwe. :D They are truly comical birds and I love watching their call progressions. There is one that has been hogging a hillock on the Rabelais Dam for the last two years (I presume it's the same one) and, every time we pass that way, we make it a point to stop and watch him. Hope he finds those elusive females soon.

Now to think of a suitable Q. :hmz: By the way, I wonder if some humannoises could be classified under this thread?

Question (whew, finally) ....

Rhinos, giraffes, hippos, and elephants can communicate over several thousand metres. What sound do they use to achieve this?

I believe they use ultrasonic sounds for communicating over this distance :hmz:

They use sub-sonic sounds. Too low for humans to detect.

Thanks for the answers, Phokojwe, Heksie, and Rooies.

Though Phokojwe and Heksie were on the right track, it is indeed infrasonic wavelengths - mostly below the human lower limit of hearing - that these animals use to communicate over long distances. Well done, Rooies.
