It's derived from a Greek word for 'sharp point'

Thanks WFG!

Why do some animals eyes reflect a reddish colour from a spotlight?

Red Eye -
The tapetum lucidum, formed by the choroid at the back of the eye, is wedged between layers of blood vessels on either side but itself is avascular. It is responsible for reflecting light of various colours, producing the characteristic iridescence seen in flash photography of animals and in front of car headlights, and is believed to be a nocturnal adaptation by increasing stimulation of the photosensitive cells of the retina.
many animals lack a tapetum lucidum and the result is the typical 'red-eye' seen in humans due to the appearance of the blood vessels of choroid and the underlying the cornea.

 normana53!

Red eyes are especially apparent in the animals with larger pupils; the nocturnal ones!

You're it!

( and hope you're not getting the freezing cold weather we're experiencing - bit unseasonal for this part of the world....)

Yes it has been very cold here. When I went to bed last night it was -23c. Brrrrrrrrr!

Speaking of cold - what defense mechanism do many birds, and other animals use to protect themselves against the cold when sleeping?

I don't know much about birds but I've heard they fluff up their feathers which acts as insulation against the cold

That's one way, but I am thinking of something much more effective. It is a physiologic change. (Hint).

On extremely cold nights, birds reduce heat loss further by burying naked body parts into their feathers.
Also....have an amazing network of blood vessels in their feet and legs that minimizes heat loss.

Still not quite what I am looking for. (Hint - Hummingbirds, nighthawks, Doves and Swifts do it.)

Some birds will go into a 'mini hibernation' - a torpor where they slow their heart rates and lower their body temp /metabolism only for the night....
