A Combretum imberbe tree:

a) Is found from South Africa up until the Sahara Desert.
b) Can always be identified by it's silvery-grey bark that is cracked into a multitude of rectangular blocks (like bricks in a wall).
c) Has red flowers and four-winged seeds.
d) Has been used by local peoples to white wash their huts and as a toothpaste, while the tree's gum has been eaten.
e) Has the hardest wood in the world, with a specific gravity (density) 29% greater than that of water.

(And, Imberbe, you're not allowed to answer! )

I'd say B. is the most accurate.
The calcium rich ash is also used to white wash houses, but i don't know
about the tree gum being eaten. The flowers were or still are used in
cough mixture.

I would think C is the only inaccurate statement.

Anyone else with an answer?

A Combretum imberbe tree:

a) Is found from South Africa up until the Sahara Desert.
False - too many true ones below so I'm not even going to reaserch this... :hmz:

b) Can always be identified by it's silvery-grey bark that is cracked into a multitude of rectangular blocks (like bricks in a wall).
True - unless you mean that light grey is not silvery grey. :hmz: The bark which does indeed break up into small, regular blocks (like snake-skin) is striking and characteristic.

c) Has red flowers and four-winged seeds.
False - The flowers are creamy to creamy-yellow. Seed is indeed four-winged.

d) Has been used by local peoples to white wash their huts and as a toothpaste, while the tree's gum has been eaten.
True - I think we have a dispute here! This is a second true one. The ash is indeed used to whitewash houses, and the ash can be used as toothpaste. So this is true together with b) :hmz: But, if you stick to only one correct then I'll have to go with this one.

e) Has the hardest wood in the world, with a specific gravity (density) 29% greater than that of water.
False - I believe the honour belongs to ironwood? Or do I misremember? Will have to go look again at when I put Imberbe on the spot!

There IS only one correct answer! I want to see if there is anyone else! Oh, and Imberbe, you can come into the fray at this stage, if you like! (Hope your ego isn't too bruised  )

If you insist on only one correct answer then it must be d), in that other trees' bark also cracks up like that...
