The aardvark

(a) has 4 toes on its front feet
(b) eats Cucumis humifructus, for their seed value
(c) is quite a good swimmer
(d) Sydney Stent confirmed that the fruit of the aardvark pumpkin grows underground.

Which of the above is true?

Siobain, I'm sure you're correct, because that's the only one I don't know. The others are indeed so.

a) True - has four toes, although in spoor, usually it is only three that shows.
b) False - The seeds pass right through, and is buried in the dung pellet, which is actually the way it is spread and planted.
c) Swimmer? Don't know. And since the first False led to a 3/4, changing it to True must then give a 4/4
d) True - South African Sydney Stent confirmed that the fruit grows underground after, two years earlier, it was made off as boo-boo, and that it must have been buried underground by the locals for the sake of preservation.

I don't have a lot on suni here at work and I'm too lazy to search, but the 13cm just feels a bit long for their horns, and males can get to at least 9kg according to Eddie Young, so I'll go fo:

1. D
2. D
3. B

OK, I guess that means I messed up!

Let me see then:

A) Black-faced impala - I take it we are speaking about the Angolan Impala - Aepyceros melampus petersi.

It is actually more threatened by the aftermath of the war in its native Angola than by anything else. After the war there's probably not many left, but fortunately some were introduced into Namibia some time ago, and they are now quite abundant on game farms where they are being introduced for breeding and ultimately hunting purposes, thus ensuring their survival.

I am not sure about the remaining wild populations, but I can only think that goats are their main threat - after humans that is. Mills confirms this, so I'll go with D)

B) Suni. I see that the record horn length for the suni is 13.34 cm (5 1/4"), so I was wrong there. Now, does Elzet round off or not... Let's see. I only have one book referring to the weight figure of Young, so I'm going to accept a transcription error, and belive the other sources that state max just over 5 kgs. They are often caught, and I only took a guess at the beg... I mean tail wagging, so I'll go with C) then.

C) Lastly the eland. Females have horns, and they're the largest antelope in Africa, so that leaves either B) or C). While calves follow any adult, and will try to suckle from any female, females aggressively repel suckling attempts by calves other than their own. Thus B) is also out, which leaves only C). Interesting. I know, and have seen old photos, of tame eland, and zebra, being used as farm animals, especially inspanned in front of wagons, but it was not really successful. And I know of a number of occasions where "tame" eland have killed or seriously hurt their owners...

So:
1. D
2. C
3. C

Thanks bishop, interesting about the impala. I'll wait and see if
Elzet has anything to add.
