There are no barbs on the quills of a porcupine.

True, the barbs are designed so that the quill enters the porcupine's attacker as far as possible. A side-effect of this is indeed that the barbs make it difficult to remove the quills without snapping the quill inside of you.

Porcupine quills are sharp as needles. Unlike needles, quills have backwards facing barbs that catch on the skin making them difficult to extract.

If you have a look at the porcupine's quill you will have a very hard try and find the so called barb. You will see that it is nice and smooth. You may then wonder why it is so hard to find it and if it is so hard to find, how can it be so effective?! :hmz:

So let me first define "porcupine". If we use the word porcupine on this forum, we refer to one of the species found in Africa, and most probably to the animal often called the "Cape porcupine" which occurs in Southern Africa. This belongs to the so called the "old world" or crested porcupines. New world porcupines are found in the America's.

And here lies the root of the confusion!

New world porcupines have smaller quills, though still very effective. And yes, they have barbs which keeps the quill firmly lodged.

"Our" porcupine does not have barbs on its quills. These much stronger quills are difficult to extract purely because of their strength and the depth they penetrate due to the force applied.

Which makes Koedoe IT! :cam:

 That's a "barbie" trick, IB. :naughty:

Seriously, though, that is why the quizzes are so effective - so we can learn from each other's knowledge! Great Q, IB.

Well done Koedoe.

Thanks oom IB for a very interesting q.

True or false: the sting of this scorpion will kill you in 10 minutes.

False. Though the venom can be distressing, the fatality rate is well below 1%, and does not kill anywhere as quickly as 10 minutes.

Anri, thanks for being so very honest :)
Although the Transvaal thick-tailed scorpion is responsible for the most stings and deaths in Zimbabwe, it is not that venomous, that it will kill anybody within 10 minutes. If treated in time correctly, nobody will die from a scorpion sting!!!
OWN   you are IT!!!!
