True or False:

The earliest sunrise and the latest sunset of the year always coincides with the summer solstice (longest day of the year); conversely, the latest sunrise and the earliest sunset of the year always occurs at the winter solstice (shortest day of the year)?

False - whilst earliest / latest sunrise / sunset and latest / earliest sunrise / sunset occur around the summer and winter solstice the exact date that they occur is a function of the latitude at which you are situated.

For example, in Perth, WA our earliest sunrise was 30/11/2013 and latest sunset is 6/1/2014 whilst Brisbane, QLD was 25/11/2013 and 6/1/2014 respectively. Johannesburg was 27/11 and 5/1/2014 respectively.

Thanks OWN, eish, have'nt seen a computer in two weeks so only now catching up :slap:

True or false:

As a cheap, readily available and nutritious source of protein and other elements one only has to look as far as the stink-bug.

If you haven't been near a computer, sounds like you had a great festive season, TP?

I know that the stink bug is eaten in a few countries of Africa, but this is more a local speciality than something freely available. So, though a source of protein, I doubt it would be commercially viable, especially considering its notorious odour. Hence, I'd say FALSE.

OWN and Delene D, sorry, the answer would be true, so well done Philip1

As you have said OWN, stink bugs are eaten in a number of countries in Africa, and in fact the Venda have a method of removing the bad smell and taste of the stink bug. These are eaten less as a local delicacy and more as a protein supplement, along with a number of other insects such as the mopane worm, locusts etc.

Mass for mass, stink bugs (and other edible insects) have a higher protein content than other animal and plant foodstuffs - beef, chicken, fish, soybean etc. so it would make sense to consider these as a viable alternative to the expensive meats.

Stink bugs swarm and collect on sand olive leaves, so it would be relatively easy to "farm" these, treat them and provide a cheap form of protein and it might be time to give this some serious consideration given the state of play in terms of traditional protein sources.

Oh OK then, twist my arm will you   And I wish on the "young" part

True or False:

The disease Rinderpest, which has wiped out countless numbers of animals over the years is now a thing of the past and has been completely eradicated, much like smallpox.

True. I think the WHO has declared it eradicated a year or two ago. I think smallpox was declared eradicted a good few years ago. My grandfather used to speak of the Rinderpest as a time in history and he died in 1959, so I would like to hear more about it. Sorry I never took him seriously - he could have educated me more than my school did!
