Correct OWN - space is not the empty void that everyone thinks - I'm not sure if it is any worse than the typhoon that just decimated the Phillipines though!

Yes, very sad indeed, TP. Many people these days are blaming these tragic events on global warming and doomsday prophecies, but there have been regular, and massive, disasters in certain global hotspots over the centuries. Krakatoa was one such disaster in the 1880's. It makes me very thankful that we live in relatively stable meteorological and geological areas.

Agreed, I'm afraid I'm not a firm believer in the effects of global warming - typhoons / hurricanes of this violence have long been recorded - way before the industrial age. For example, the typhoon that stopped Gengis Khan from invading Japan was as violent as the one that hit the Phillipines - and that was back in the middle ages!

Is there truth behind the old adage, “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight; Red sky in the morning, sailor’s warning”? If so, please explain.

Onewithnature, :) i remeber about 60 years ago that my Dad taught me this. :thumbs_up:

Red sky at night, sailors delight.
When we see a red sky at night, this means that the setting sun is sending its light through a high concentration of dust particles. This usually indicates high pressure and stable air coming in from the west. Basically good weather will follow.
Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning.
A red sunrise reflects the dust particles of a system that has just passed from the west. This indicates that a storm system may be moving to the east. If the morning sky is a deep fiery red, it means a high water content in the atmosphere. So, rain is on its way.

Even written in the Bible……Matthew 16: 2-3

So, you must have been an infant in arms when your dad taught you, eh, Philip? :wink:

Yes, well done. :clap: :clap: I must add, though, that though these warnings have merit, they do not always result in what may be predicted. However, it is always prudent to take cognisance of the possibilities when one see red skies in the morning and at night.

Okay, let's have some fun with the earth's wind patterns. It would be nice if some other quizzers also throw their contributions into the mix. :pray:

The prevailing winds in the following earth zones blow mostly in which directions:

a) 0-30 degrees latitude, north and south of the equator;
b) 30-60 degrees latitude, north and south of the equator;
c) 60-90 degrees latitude, north and south of the equator?

b) 30-60 degrees latitude, north and south of the equator;

30-60 degrees latitude, north blows in a SW direction.
30-60 degrees latitude, south blows in a NW direction.

What kind of weather does a high pressure system bring?

Timepilot :thumbs_up:

Dry, stable conditions with little cloud. The air associated with a high pressure system sinks down from above and warms as it does so and is very stable. When compared with low pressure systems, highs tend to cover a greater area, move more slowly and have a longer life. When the high pressure system is located over land the weather will be typically dry and free of cloud
