Meteorological Weather Quiz (OQ)

Unread postby onewithnature » Sun Mar 29, 2009 3:32 am

Many people are fascinated with weather patterns and its consequences. And we all have complained because the local weather station didn't predict the prevailing weather accurately.

The intention of this quiz is to awaken forumites to the many aspects of weather - and there are plenty, from clouds, to pressure systems, to precipitation, to tides, and so on and so on - and what a particular situation means for upcoming weather changes.

It is best to keep it relatively simple, as we are not all meteorologists! There is tons to learn here.

OQ, which means that anyone can post once an answer to a particular question has been confirmed by the question poser.

Let me begin:

Winds blow between land masses and sea. Usually, they blow in specific directions during the day and again at night. Which way during the day, and which way during the night?

Hi OWN!

Nice idea this one!

I'm going to try the first answer:

Landwards by day, seawards by night.

My reasoning:
Land masses get warmer than water during the day. Warm air rises, cold air sinks because it has a higher density (is that the correct physical term?!?). Hence, the warm air above the land masses rises and the cooler air from the sea flows towards the land.

Once the sun sets, it's the other way around: Land masses cool off quicker than water. The warm air above the sea rises and cooler air from the land flows towards the sea.

Excellente, Lionspoon! You are absolutely one-hundred percent correct!

Obviously, there is a time when the temperatures of the sea and land are similar, in which case there will be little or no wind at that time. (From the above process.) However, later in the evening and day, the winds should move as you have explained.

This is an OQ, so ANYBODY can post!
Go for it mites ...

Around new and full moon, when the Sun, Moon and Earth are aligned, the tidal forces are greater because it is not only the moon doing most of the pulling of the waters, but the sun also.
The difference between high and low tides is then at a maximum, which is called a spring tide. Spring tides happen every two weeks because that is when full and new moons occur.

Spring tides result in higher waters than normal, lower waters than normal, and stronger tidal currents. Neaps result in less extreme tidal conditions.

Also, when the Moon is at perigee (closer to earth), the range between high and low tides is even greater, and when it is at apogee the range is reduced.

What are common signs of a cold front approaching?

The winds change direction from southwest to southeast in the northern hemisphere, and from northwest to northeast in the southern hemisphere. The atmospheric pressure drops. Short showers usually precede the front passing. There is an increasing cloud buildup, from white clouds to heavier, grey thunderstorm type clouds (the latter when the front reaches you) Also, visibility may drop.

Not really, Timepilot ... I studied this when I was at school and remember some things related to weather. This is pretty logical, actually, if you think about it. That's why I remembered it,
But thanks ...
