I would go for John Haldane having said it.

"If one could conclude as to the nature of the Creator from a study of creation, it would appear that God has an inordinate fondness for stars and BEETLES."

Using sheer numbers of species as a criterion for success, these are the most successful animals on Earth. If single examples of every plant and animal species were placed in a row, every SECOND species would be AN INSECT, and every SECOND species of insectS would be a BEETLE."

I feared it was somewhat vague when I tried to formulate the question, but you did an excellent job on first try. Let me make it clearer, now that you got the speaker and the insect right....

Every ____#____ would be a BEETLE, and every ___#___ would be a _______ (kind of beetle).....

Try again, hopefully it will be clearer.

Here's the answer, so anyone is free to post the next question:

Using sheer numbers of species as a criterion for success, these are the most successful animals on Earth. If single examples of every plant and animal species were placed in a row, every FIFTH species would be A BEETLE, and every TENTH species would be a WEEVIL.

Because he has mated with her before and therefore carries her mark
so she will never mate with him again?

Hm-m-m-m...

COULD be: He didn't even bother to take her out to dinner first.
She didn't know he was rich.
She wasn't "THAT kind of cricket".
Unfortunately, he was a dead ringer for Jiminy.
Although they say stinger size doesn't matter, she knew
differently from personal experience.

But I'm putting my money on the fact that he didn't whisper sweet nothings and serenade her with her favorite song..i.e. the courtship involves species specific songs to attract a mate?

Only thing I can think of is essentially the same concept as before, re: not the right "song" for the species the female is.

The volume and pitch of the male's call is unique and helps suitable partners to locate one of their own species.

Maybe she was deaf, or he had lost his wings and couldn't produce any sound, or she was too far away to hear it...obviously, I don't really know the exact answer you're looking for...

Anybody else?

You are so close. But I want to point to a specific fact, which you haven't picked up on yet.

The clues (2) are in the way I formulated the question. :)

The temperature is too cold for the crickets to breed. A good temperature
for them to breed is about 25 degrees celsius. The babies like it a bit
warmer.

But wouldn't the external temperature be the same for both the "cool" female and the "hot" male?...
