 Which Bird were studied during September-December, 1969 in the Transvaal, chiefly in the Kruger National Park, and observations were made on their distribution, behaviour etc. Territorial behaviour, nest-building, pair formation displays, vocalizations and food habits are described as well as the division of labour between male and female in care of the young.

Gosh, more intensive research than (is it possible) the microscopic dissection of the lives of the Kardashians. 8)

Easy one... :hmz:

Why do black herons hold their wings in a canopy over their heads?

The Black Heron has an interesting hunting method called canopy feeding—it uses its wings like an umbrella, and uses the shade it creates to attract fish. Some Black Herons feed solitarily, while others feed in groups of up to 50 individuals, 200 being the highest number reported. The Black Heron feeds by day but especially prefers the time around sunset. The primary food of the Black Heron is small fish, but it will also eat aquatic insects, crustaceans and amphibians.

Philip1

It is believed that black herons do this for one of the following 3 reasons:

1. To create shade to attract fish.
2. Another theory is that the canopy reduces glare or reflection, making it easier to catch small prey.
3. The entire bird is covered in black plumage, which makes the bill, head, and neck invisible and disguises the bird under the canopy to possibly give it the edge in capturing prey.

:hmz: This Bird, +- 28 cms high, is a swift flier, indulging in acrobatics during the breeding season and one typical aspect of this birds behavior is, that it also preys on animals fleeing from bush fires.

I know that rollers perform lovely acrobatic dives in the breeding season and that they also hang around when the bush is burnt. From the size you mention, I'd say you could be talking about the lilac breasted roller?
