Kruger legends, old and new.

Unread postby Meandering Mouse » Tue Jun 10, 2014 3:33 pm

This is a quizz to look at the personalities that shaped Kruger, both old and new.

You are allowed three clues and then the guessing starts.

The first personality:

Little German man
Led an army
Stationed at the Sabie River, now Skukuza.
The bird doesn't sing because it has answers, it sings because it has a song.

Well done, you are now in the driver's seat.

Stiennekker, or Baron Steinnekker as he called himself, was one of the more eccentric and colorful characters of the early twentieth century. He was a little man and prone to temper outbursts of the strangest kind. He wore a very colorful uniform filled with medals.

He was pretty much a self appointed leader of a true rat pack of soldiers in the boer war. They did not fight any battles, but made a severe dent in the animal population around the Skukuza area. With endless cases of rum and a good supply of ammunition, they were rather a destructive force.

Steinnekker, for obvious reasons, was not given a post in the British army following the war. This infuriated him. He later went insane and died a very sad death. He was probably insane for a lot of his life.

Harry Wolhuter was one of the soldiers under Steinnekker and writes about him in his book, "Memories of a Game Ranger". James Hamilton Stevenson also gives a more thorough account of his eccentric man in his book, ""South African Eden''.

Nice quizz MM  My three clues are:

1930’s to 1940’s
An Entrance Gate
This entrance gate to the Park was moved 10km (6 miles) to the west of Rabelais in 1954

Someone made the above possible.

The Orpens. Eileen Orpen was very generous in the early Park years and donated huge tracts of land in the central area that connected the Sabie Reserve and Shingwetzi.

A picture of the Orpens hanging in Rabelais hut.

I think Eileen Orpen died after her husband and kept very involved in Kruger until her own death.

:D Yes MM, you are correct

The Kruger personality is Mrs Eileen Orpen who bought up seven farms immediately to the west of Rabelais Gate during the 1930s and 1940s and donated them to the Park. The area west of the Rabelais Gate was then extended.
