Hi.

This is the best road in the park to see Wild Dog. I've seen Wild Dog, Rhino & Elephant on this road.

I would not bet my money on it being the best wilddog road, as I've seen wilddogs more often between Lower Sabie and Crocodile bridge (4 times ) and Skukuza and Tshokwane (3 times) than on the H3 (1 time).

This is an excellent road. Have seen all the big 5 (including black rhino) from this road. Many rare sightings as well. This road just gets a little busy in peak times for my liking.

Believe me this is the best road in the Park to see Wild Dogs.

As wilddog packs have their dens at different locations each litter, you will find that the area where a densite is has the biggest probability of delivering a sighting.

therefor the areas change as the wilddogs move. remember they can travel vast distances a day.

About 10-15 years ago Punda maria was a hot spot for the dogs. Now they are seen there less.


Pretoriuskop has also proved to be a good wilddog area over the years.

I know that Christo, I've have been gathering info from forumites & this road has produced the most sightings followed by the H1-1, H5, S26, H7 & H4-2.

Agreed. Just keep in mind that this might change again and that there might even be more sightings on other roads, but these are not reported.

Only thing of note constantly seen here was Rhinos. But have seen huge herds of zebra and blue wildebeest just south of Afsaal.

Also once nearly drove OVER a SERVAL coming down from the Skukuza, Pkop junction on the H3. Serval wasn't very happy with me. Gave me a "nice going a$$wipe" look before it trotted off into the bush.

Don't think Servals have a good sense of humour.

Only travelled this road once, way too busy to our liking, but Ishare Christo's view as far as the big five is concerned - it gave us a stalking leopard, pride of lion, plenty of rhino and elephant from 07:00 to 09:00 in one morning.

According to my records this road is a total of 48.5 km between Malelane Gate and the H1-1 junction. I have travelled a total of 411.9 km on the H3 since 1987. My personal experience is that it has never proven to be a particurlay good road. I have seen leopard, lion and white rhino on this road (and love travelling this road), but I will not regard it as an exceptional good road for game viewing.

I've found the best sightings in summer time if I leave Berg & Dal at 04:30 when predators are common on the road. I usually break at Afsaal and again at Skukuza, after visiting Renosterkoppies & Stevenson Hamilton look out. Eat breakfast at Skukuza at +- 8 and drive back at a steady pace, arriving back in Berg & Dal at +- 11:00.

Its a hit and miss road in my opinion , ill give it a 6/10
Sometimes you can see absolutely nothing , and sometimes plenty .
The grass can get very long also .

I like jock waterhole area , and find this bit very good .

Have seen wild dogs a few times along here , as well as cheetah,leopard and black rhino .

The route from Berg en Dal to Afsaal 4 times

Apart from the sleeping white rhino near Afsaal nothing special
And of course the sidestriped Jackal near Skukuza

This road is a mixed bag , I have once seen Lion , leopard , cheetah , black rhino , wild dog and hyena in one drive from Malelane to Skukuza

Other times the road can drag on without anything and it is a long road .

...my experience of just about every road in Kruger!!!!! The H3 can be really great - or 'boring' but the scenery is always good anyway.

Hi All,

I have done this road only once. Saw a few white rhino not far from Melalane Gate, but other than that, was quite quiet. Even the impala were scarce.

I will give it another go and enter through Melalane on my March trip.
