@Elsa -
I didn't notice the road surface being terribly corrugated in December :)
The S36 is still a rattle your teeth out surface :roll: The rest of the dirt roads around satara seemed fine surfaces :D

On the S39 near Roodewal, always give the hills a good inspection for these beauties!

Thanks MM - I might not drive the S39 this Aug then as there won't be water in the Timbaviti attracting animals.

Thanks saraf and stoffel for the other water supply tips!

That would be a grave mistake Graham!
The S39 North of Timbavati does not dry up in the winter! I was there in June last year :D
There will be dams and river :dance:

Give the S39 a miss at your own peril. It is the best road between Satara and Olifants in dry months!

I totaly agree with Cheetah. Even if the Timbavati is dry, you cannot miss the S39. Last year had reasonable rainfalls, so many rivers remained fairly robust. The S39 covers many ecozones, so the changing trees and shrubs alone make it a treat. The Timbavati picnic site also sits dear to my heart.

I love the S39 and have driven that route regardless of the river.

Even in dry season, there might be pools of water. The ellies also detect and dig for water. I once witnessed a stand off between Lion and ellie in a very dry Sand river.

My first set of pics are from June :thumbs_up:
The very green batch with the dogs is December last year :thumbs_up:

The area is indeed good for leopard! :D If luck is on your side that is :lol:
The stretch around Roodewal in the North is very dry. Lots of Mopani. Then it transforms into open veld! I have seen Lion twice in the open regions! Image

Then it is the dams and the Timbaati river where the terrain transforms into riverine bush will towering tall trees! There is bound to be plenty of game around there in June :D

If I were you, I would take the H1-4 first thing in the morning! The open grasslands making it a good road for Lion and Cheetah :D Then came back up to Olifants on the S39 when the animals will be coming to the river to drink :D

Lucky you Nkulu! I drove this road 3 days ago and nada, niks, nothing! I think 1 elephant over the entire stretch! Didn't help that sanparks' burn programme happen to start on that day as well!
