One road we travel every time we visit KNP is the S100, and so far we saw lions every time Perhaps again a case of being at the right place at the right time ...







Must add that we have seen Rhino only once on S100 - so not a perfect "Big 5 Route"

For me definitely the S100.
Went to Satara for 1 night this weekend.
There is nothing like the park!
Went for an afternoon drive at 4pm.
Took the S100.
Saw lots of general game.
About 5km in went down the first low water bridge and was following an x-trail, browsed through the riverbed and there the most elegant leopard sitting on a rock!
Flashed for the guy in the x-trail but he was gone It was no more than 10 meters away.
Got some superb shots
Spotting a leopard on your own is something out of this world:)
Drove further down and found 2 female lions sleeping on the side.
Apparently they were part of a big pride.
drove further down and took a u 2 get back to camp.
Next morning there was no doubt which road I was taking:)
Went down the S100 at gate opening time, I might have been the 10th car in the line.
I must say it wasn't as bad as people make it seem.
Drove slowly and about half way in the car in front of me spotted these lionesses in the bush on the left.
More or less same place where I saw them the previous day.
1 by one the stood up and started walking around.I counted 14 including few cubs and 2 huge males
.Spoke to the guy next to me and he said he saw them the previous morning on the road and he counted 24 of them
Great to see them in such superb condition!
Left and headed in the direction of Nwanetsi Picnic spot.
Before the T_junction saw these 2 male impalas on edge.
They were snorting like u cant believe>i
Was 100% sure there was a leopard around but just couldn't see it.
Have seen leopard in the same area twice on previous occasions.
Headed for the Nwanetsi tar road on my way back to Satara.
About 3km from the turn saw this massive male lion on the road.
On the side of the road there was another huge male lion.
Drove further up and there were 3 more Huge male lions as well!
5 massive male lions and the biggest I've seen!
Coalition of 5! were were watching the 1 on the road, he went off in the bush and the other 1 walked on.
Saw this ranger on a bicycle in the distance and the lion looked at him and ran in the bush behind a tree as if he was stalking him!!!!
The car in front of me sped off towards that guy to warn him and I also followed him.
Informed the ranger he didn't seem to be scared but said we must drive between him and the lions and as he drove past they stood up!
Thought he was a goner!!!
Luckily for the ranger everything went off well!!!
My heart was in my throat!!!
For me Satara is Lion Country
The S100 has got to be the Lion Highway for me

I was in the park in June just before the soccer, only stayed one night Satara but had 9 lions on the S100.
then again last week i stayed two nights at Satara.
On the tar road to Olifants we had 16 lions, they were there the whole day, crossing the road a few times.
then the next day they killed a wildebeest on the s90. nice action there as well, with the hyenas trying to chase the lions off the kill.
My dad who was in another vehicle saw 10 lions close to end of the S100.

the best day i ever had on the S100 was 2 years ago in October.
drove from lower sabie to satara. took the sweni road as we were quite early, got a pride of twenty lions about 3 km into the sweni road.

made a u turn there and headed for satara. took the S90 . no great sightings there.

at the turn to the S100 WE could not believe our luck. another huge pride of lions, about 24 in total.

two km into the S100 a lone lioness trying to hunt kudu.

a few km further down, a leopard in a tree. we were the only car there!!!

then just before the S100 joins the tar road to satara we had 4 lionesses.
must say... that day was the day of the lions!!!

the best place to see lion for me is satara then lower sabie.

The S100 is just like any other road in the park - 'Right place, Right time'

I will always try to give he S100 a go when I am in the area and yes, I have seen plenty of game including Lions and Leopards.

On my last trip down the s100, saw 2 great male lions a mere 2 meters from my car!

Pah!

You've both been drinking firewater!

We've had numerous good sightings on the S100 during the last 4 years including leopard with two cubs and other leopard sightings, numerous lions with cubs sightings, cheetah, breeding herds of ellies, rhinos, hainas etc.

But we have also driven this road without seeing any game, even early in the mornings, just like with any other road in Kruger. You are never guaranteed. Still.. the S100 (together with the S28 LS - Croc bridge) remains our favourite road(s) in Kruger.

Even if you see nothing on the S100, the field along this road is beautifull and for me personally the road/field has this "high expectancy/good probability which I don't know how to describe look". Especially just before gate closing time.

I must admit that during holiday months, the road do become overcrowded and the dust is anoying. Maybe this will start creating more "S100 dislikers" not travelling the road any more causing less traffic and dust on the road and the "S100 fans" can enjoy the road even more. (joke)

You know, I don't care that the S100 is "quiet" or "no animals". Its the road in the KNP that most screams "Africa" to me and I love it. I think this time I am going to video the drive, so I can relive it when I'm back in cold, wet, soggy England.

Hi Cheetah2111! Hope you come back with a load of good reports about the S100!
What I love about that road is that, besides the chance of good sightings (like anywhere else I guess), it runs alongside the river and there are lovely spots to pull off the road and simply enjoy the beauty and calmness of the scenery.
One such event had us close-up to a Fish-eagle, a meter or two away, and before it flew off it tilted back its head and gave its call. Awesome moment.
Hope you experience real great moments there too!

This road never fails to deliver.
I've seen all big five and plenty more of general game.
In August we had a pride of 12 lioness's including 2 cubs at the windmill drinking water & then walked back across the road to meet the male who was waiting for them.
His companion that we've seen most years in the same vicinity was not around.
My friends had seen him a few days earlier, but said he looked in a terrible condition.
This road give the best sunrise of all in KP in MHO.
