This road has certainly lived up to expectations the last couple of trips to the park.
In December we specifically drove this road early morning and saw three different prides of lion quite a few time during the course of our stay, three different leopards, hyena and several other great general game sightings.
I found this road to especially good in December in the past just after the first rains - the grass on the floodplains adjacent to the Nwanedzi River is sweet and attracts plenty general game and the predators.
There is a specific female leopard at the big sycamore fig on the S100 which love this tree at present and we saw her there on a regular basis this year.

on my last trip in 2005 some of the best pics/sightings were on this road - and they even were around mid-day as we weren`t staying at Satara!

In 2 months I´ll be 3 nights in Satara and will definitely drive this road again! Although there are also other nice roads there which I´ll also drive...

Being new to this forum, I stumbled across this thread.
I must say I am amazed that people take S100 as being over rated.
Since my first visit to the park (that I can recall) S100 has had a special place in my heart.
In the horrific drought of the early 90's S100 was crawling with predators (lion,leopard and cheetah)
So much so, that I can remember still sleeping in the early morning ride on S100 even though my mom and dad were viewing lion.
There would be the S100 pride then you would drive up to Gudzani and Gudz East and see those prides as well. The droughts ended and since then although not as prolific the predator hit rate is still well over 70%.

Just luck - who put up the cardboard cututs of leopards and rhino

We saw a pride of lions with cubs on the s100 in June.


Also a large herd of Buffs and some good Eagle sightings.



It can be a very rewarding road

The S100 is indeed one of the most special roads in Kruger.
Always something special to see.
We encountered countless herds of zebra, impala and blue wildebeest during the 2nd week of July.
Also lots of elephant and as always, lions.
On a night drive we came across a lone lioness, lying in the grass.
She then began to roar and was immediately answered by a male lying on the other side of the road.
So special.
After numerous night drives all over Kruger, this was our very first lion encounter.
2 AWC's, 1 Serval and 2 Civets to make the drive even more special.
All on this very special road.

They don't call me the HITMAN for nothing.......
On the S100 we HIT the spot every time we went there.
In Apr 2009 we saw the big five there in just about an hour.
Those that were there,will remember the leopard in a tree just before you get to the tar road to Satara ....,
That was us found it there and what a nice couple of moments that was.
That was on the same day as when the big pride of lions were chased by buffalo.

GO S100

Drove S100 in the 4 Sept, saw family of about 12 lions and further on 3 beutiful you male lions And it really wasn't that busy.. must say everyone was actually quite pleasant

We've seen Lion, Cheetah and Leopard on the S100...I can't believe how much you see on that road!

Just back (still in Dubai airport actually).
Our 2 days in Satara included a few goes at the s100.
There was a pride of 11 lions (one young male, a few cubs and females) at a waterhole for the two days. Second day at 5.30 we saw two large males walking away from each other, obviously they had been fighting as one was very cut up on the face.
Great road.

Now im no fan of the S100, horrible river views, drab scenery, dusty...

But last weekend i decided to give it another chance. Within the 1st 9km, i saw 2 males feeding on a buffalo. 2km further on another 3 lioness chilling in the shade, and after another 1km another 3 lion/ess's on a sandy mound watching a herd of elephants go by.

I wonder if these lions were from seperate prides?

The S100 - Either delivers or does not.
Been down that road so many times and have seen so much - including the Big 5 on one drive. Plenty of Lions around - they are there but not always seen.
You just have to be lucky - Right place, right time.

Will be staying in Satara for 2 nights end December and I can promise all of you ONE thing - THE S100 WILL BE DRIVEN BY THE MAROON FRONTIER MORE THAN ONCE.
my absolute favourite road, have not seen many animals on it, but ai, still my favourite of all. "Ruby"- the Frontier also LOVES it as she is able to drive through a few streams - provided it has rained and the streams has water in it. And then the Sweni birdhide - what a beautiful place, the Gudzani Dam with the dead tree off to the left (and if by chance the fisheagle is sitting in that same tree and gives his worldrenowned call - JIPPEE ), the lovely Nwanetsi picnicsite (with its VIEW) and to top it all - the H6 at the end before you turn back to Satara.
What a privilege to see and experience all that in a circle of 43km!! Any animals and birds seen are a bonus for me.

I wonder if the mating lions were the same ones we saw just round the corner from the S100 on the S41(towards N'wanetsi) last Wednesday.
There was one male and we watched him mating with both the two females that were with him.
We had this spectacle all to ourselves for 45 minutes before any other vehicles came along.
