S131 gravel road near Phalaborwa gate

Unread postby cheetahlady » Sun Apr 19, 2015 3:46 am

We have not seen or heard much about this road. We are entering the park at Phalaborwa, en route to Mopani. We can either take the tar to the H14 or take the S131 just after the gate. Does anyone have any info on this road?

I would definitely take the S131, not a hugely productive road, but I've always found it far more interesting than the tar route. There is a waterhole at the northern end of the S131 just before you reach the S131 and I've had some nice sightings there (giraffe, warthogs and a variety of birds) and on the right, after you pass the waterhole turnoff (which is on the left) there's a lovely big sycamore fig tree in/along the dry riverbed.

I agree with Arks that it is a much more interesting road. I have had a few lovely ellie sightings and quite good buffalo sightings.

I did see a fair amount of game at one of the waterholes when I did it in the dry season. Otherwise, sightings were not that many.

I would also definitely recommend using this road.
We drove it very slowly last year and had some wonderful and interesting sightings on it, including 4 Black backed Jackals which gave us a lovely viewing.

Cheetahlady I also recommend travelling this road. It is quiet traffic wise and we have seen a few animals, birds and two snakes on this road :D enjoy  :cam:

Hi cheetahlady,
I have to recommend this road. My introduction to KNP was entering at Phalaborwa and taking the S131. My first Elephant sighting was on this road. This old-timer might still be there.

In 2007, I've read that the only drawback was commercial vehicles sometimes used this road as a shortcut heading north. Things could be different now. Enjoy your trip. :)

Thank you for all your feedback. Well worth a try then. We will go this route when entering the park in June. Only 48 days to go

Very interesting road... used to link to the old Malepene Gate north of Phalaborwa.
When Phalaborwa Gate opened the road was diverted south to link up with the new Phalaborwa Gate and eventually completely closed to the public when the Phalaborwa – Letaba road (H-9) was opened. Fantastic to drive it again.
