We are due to arrive in Nelspruit on Wednesday from the UK and our first camp is Crocodile Bridge. From what we have read on the forum this is a no no. Can anyone advise whether the camps further north are ok of the flooding - we wondered if we could change to go to Pretoriuskop and go to Satara that way. Any help please?

Welcome and beware of addiction!

A bit more reading and you would have had your mind set at rest...... Crocodile Bridge now has a new bridge and is not affected by the river rising. The gate remains open.

It's like Ecojunkie says, no need to change your arrangements.

As said before, no need to change. We were there last week, and although the river was high, the water was no where near the level of the new bridge.

We also saw just about everything, except Leopard and Wild Dogs, within 5 kilometers of the camp.

Enjoy your trip.

Apparently the water is now flowing over the bridge too. :hmz:

Yes, as far as I understand Penny's SMS, there was debris ON the new bridge which indicated that the water was flowing over, but it must have dropped slightly in the interim.

Just spoke to CB. The bridge is open at the moment.

The bridge at Lower Sabie was also flooded but is open now.

The dirt roads around CB are closed at the moment.

@ gmilliken

I think you should be OK at Crocodile Bridge. Remember that if the bridge at CB is flooded you can still reach it via Malelane, which has a much much higher clearance bridge. It will mean driving the tar road via Skukuza to reach CB.

The dirt roads tend to get closed for a day or two when there is much rain. But not much more. It is worth your while visiting CB as it is a great area of the park. If you reach there and see that the dirt roads are still closed, you can always move your booking then.

When driving to CB on the main road (N4) outside the park, and after you have passed Malelane town, look out for a board indicating whether CB bridge is open. When they close the bridge, they always put up a sign. It will be before you reach the turn of for Malelane gate.

If you see the sign, you need to enter via Malelane gate.

Hi gmilliken

Welcome to the forum.

Should there at all be a problem with access to the KNP via the bridge of the Crocodile River at the Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp, there are many alternatives.

The best would be through the Malelane Gate which is after crossing a high bridge over the Crocodile River, other alternatives would be Numbi Gate or Phabeni. Access would definitely not be a problem, just allow enough travelling time to arrive your destination being Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp which is just wonderful.

Have a safe flight enjoy your visit and we are looking forward to your trip report.

After the heavy rains on the night/morning of 14th/15th Jan all the gravel roads between LS and CB were closed. The bridge was bone dry.
