I am a bit in the dark here. Is the bridge that is currently under construcion supposed to become the permanent bridge, because I see that some people refer to it as a temporary bridge?

Just to say, I am pretty impressed. I had no sooner landed in JHB this morning when I received a phonecall from the guys at Croc Bridge gate to tell me the bridge was closed and to warn me that I needed to use Malelane to get into the park this afternoon.

Well done guys for the forward thinking and advising guests like this, some people may not always see the signs I believe are on the N4 at Malelane.

On the bright side, the new bridge's concrete "parts" were there on the roadside in front of the gate on Tuesday.

The temporary bridge is now the property of Mozambique and will soon be in the Indian ocean!

As far as I know, the old bridge is going to be lifted.

Contractor 2 - Moe?
Contractor 3 - Curly?

Africa strikes again!

Yep, we all know the answers to all the questions put here. After all the futile attempts by the various "bridge builders" to build a proper bridge, when will the people that are in charge of the cheque book begin to realize that building a bridge is not the same as building a long drop toilet.

Non SA members of this forum must be thinking, what a bunch of idiots we have got here. We haven't been able to build a simple bridge over a river over a period of 2 years whilst any company of army engineers will be able to do a better job in a couple of hours.

If I elaborate, I will be banned from this forum.

Hey Buddy, I hear whet you say. But the army today is not what it was. :sniper: SANDF and SAPS trading :sniper: , soldiers protected by unions, private security looking after SAPS, need I carry on??? :wall:

SANParks should not go with the cheapest tender, but get a reputable company to do the job, yes, maybe a few $$$ more but they will only pay once!

Looking more and more like the Dutch army the.

Contact the army. Let the army engineers construct a Baily bridge across the river and it will cost next to nothing.
The bridge will hold.
It is a very good experience for the guys in olive.
It can be taken away easily when the permanent bridge is finished.

EISH!! :wall: :wall: :wall:

Out of curiosity I google'd Baily Bridge, and I agree, it looks like the best temporary solution by far.

Just keep the army far away from it

Extremely solid. Easy too construct and has proven it's use over the last 6 decades.

Absolutely true AjayB.

But the 'bridge' is not.

AWB is right.

One tends to get what one pays for in life and the allocation of funds was almost certainly based mainly on the volume of traffic on the bridge.I dont know that we know exactly how important it is in the grand scheme of things relative to all the other areas crying out for funding from a limited pot. Its a nasty balancing act and a very very thin line to walk making calls on judicious allocation of limited resources so I just wonder what the percentage is relative to expenditure in the rest of the park. Certainly looks to be a case of "goedkoop is duurkoop" ( translate:- bargain buying is expensive buying) even though the defence of really heavy rains is a valid one. Spilt milk either way--------

Have arrived in CB camp, and I can confirm that BB's comment re "another positive" is true. There are very few people in the camp tonight, so I can imagine we will have this corner of the park to ourselves for a few hours in the morning... :D
