I am told on my last visit to the park in Jan 08 that they will be adding to the existing crocodile bridge from early winter onwards, does any one know when they are starting, will the bridge be closed , and for how long.

I am going to Kruger in for Sept / Oct Holidays and this is our primary entry point towing caravans up to Lowwer Sabie, if the bridge is closed we have a very long detour which could add an overnight to our trip or is there an alternate route for the caravans via Malelane.

Hi Paul, as far as I know they will not be closing the bridge until after the new one is complete, but stand to be corrected.

You can definately enter at Malelane with a caravan

I understand there will be a weight limit on the bridge (if not already) and large caravans may be too heavy. If you are coming up through Swaziland then I presume you are intending to come through Mananga - and then you would need to add at least 4-5 hours to the journey to go in via Malelane gate and via Skukuza to Lower Sabie.

Hi Wingman, I'm in exactly the same situation as you. Coming from Queensburgh I always go through Swaziland & on to Croc.Bridge. I'm actually spending my 1st night there on Aug.16 & I don't fancy travelling all along "devils highway" (M4) to Malelane, up to Skukuza, & all the way back down to CB for 1 night. Fortunately I only tow a Sprite Strata "D" which is not a heavy van, but if the bridge is closed, nothing can get over the river. Can some staff member from KP please inform us both exactly what the situation is please?

Croc bridge is the easiest way with a van to Lower sabie.

If entering Malelane you head up to Skukuza then across to Lower sabie which is about 100Km inside the park on tar.
The road is also busy, although I do often use this route myself.

I doubt caravans would exceed any weight restriction on a bridge as even the biggest ones don't weigh as much as a small car.

It would be interesting to know when the bridge will be closed for, I would certainly book some trips to croc bridge for that time period to enjoy the quiet traffic then hehe.

I'm very interested to know if the bridge will be closed or not. I'm actually spending a few nights outside the park in mid June this year and would use croc bridge as an entry point to the park every day.
If the bridge will be closed that will add about 40km to get into the park on a daily basis.

I saw a report on the sanparks web news archive about the entry gate upgrade . The entry gate is to be moved westwards to take the traffic away from the camp .

As I understand it from my last visit last week there will be a tempory bridge alongside the old one I assume of the usual pipe and gravel standard. Maybe the mods can help us here, at this late stage the plans must have been done how about someone getting hold of these and posting a diagram and some details.

I asked a Croc Bridge staff member recently (by phone) and she said it would commence once the rainy season is over. I don't know if traffic will b able to use the road during construction.

Hi - I have read various posts but am stil not sure - Is Crocodile Bridge entrance gate closed until the bridge upgrade is completed or can we still go in there providing our vehicle and caravan does not exceed the weight limited for the existing low-water bridge?

Bridge and entrance still open - just come home through there so up to the minute report!!!!!

Will wait to hear what Spotted Cat has to say when she return from CB I think in next week. I am sure she will be able to give as an informed opinion as CB is her favourite camp.

I e-mailed the "Top Man" in S.A.Nat. Parks. His very prompt answer. "If you see water flowing over the bridge do not take your car or caravan onto it. Turn around. If water touches your chassis you will be a boat & float away. Go back & enter through Malelane & turn onto the sand road (S25) & travel to CB that way". I kid you not!
Can you imagine us pulling a van along that road?
I had initally e-mailed Tecnical Services & they finally replied after the "Top Man" did. They stated, via Customer Relations & I quote "that they will provide a temporary bypass as an alternative to allow tourists to cross the bridge while under construction." This I therefore presume, means all will be well for us to to arrive at CB & enter.

Hi all,
There is a chance that I will be at Crocodile Bridge for 3 nights in mid November 2008. What will the extent of the upgrade be and most important what impact would the upgrade have on game in the area. With all the noise of construction and large vehicles coming and going would the peace of the camp be compromised?

i am sleeping over in croc briodge on 7/7/2008 on my way out if the park. will keep u all posted re the bridge!@!!!
