Best sites at Maroela?

Unread postby annie R » Wed Jul 23, 2014 1:28 pm

We haven't camped at Maroela near Orpen before and I was wondering if anyone had advice about which were the best sites to ask for - if in fact you can reserve a site ahead, as you can at Tsendze further north. In an ideal world we like privacy and shade, and don't mind not being nearest to the ablutions. Any advice?

Thanks, Hugh. Typically, what time do you arrive? We plan to copy you in the hope of a choice!

annie R, I am sure you are going to love the camp. I found it pristine and well kept. There really are a number of perimeter sites, so I hope that you hit jackpot.

I have memories of sipping early morning coffee with a buffalo grazing peacefully a couple of metres away. I looked at him and he looked at me.. it was love at first sight.

Sounds lovely, MM. If it's anything like Tsendze, we will definitely love it.

When we were at maroela a few years back there was a lion kill about two metres from the fence and those lions were busy growling and roaring and carrying on for about three days .There were hyenas and jackal and all the usual scavenges around too. most exciting only thing is after those three days the smell was not so nice . I think they had killed a large Buff

Awesome, Hugh. Nothing better than the sound of lions outside the camp!

Quick question.... Is there 220v at Maroela? Not an issue if there isn't as we're set up with solar and heading there for three nights in December on a north to south trip!

Maroela has 220v yes. Just no shops or restaurant.

We returned home  on Sunday after an amazing two weeks camping in Maroela. We were lucky enough to find a spot on the fence with shade for almost the whole day. The camp was never overcrowded, the ablutions spotless, the weather mostly cloudy and cool - everything was just perfect! Thanks again Zondi and Nikiwe for a very well run camp!
I could also tick one off my bucket list - the Timbavati flooded on the day after Christmas - one moment a dry riverbed and the next it is filled with water. An amazing experience!
We were also blessed with wonderful sightings - Orpen's pack of wild dogs, lions on the entrance road to the camp, cheetah and many more. The day that we entered we got a leopard in the road a couple of hundred meters after the boom gate! And when leaving on Sunday, elephant and a herd of buffalo on this same stretch between the gate proper and the boom gate.
All in all one of the best December trips to KNP ever! :D
