I agree with opening the gate at 5 am because of the nightjars and thick-knee's that are still on the road at 4.30 am. Some of the nightjars were very reluctant to fly and when they took off many times they did so first in front of my car. I can imagine that's how they get killed when somebody drives faster than 20 kilometers per hour or is not driving around the birds.

At Skukuza the gate was also opened at 4.30 am the first three days in February. I arrived at 5 am and noticed the gate was already open. On the third morning the guard was standing at the gate and I asked him why he opened so early. He said he was new and that they had told him to open at 4.30 am. I assume he started in January and that nobody had told him that the gate times change in February. :D

I told him and the next day the gate was opened at 5.30 am. On my final morning at Skukuza I told him to change again in April.

I also agree with closing at 7 pm because now you're driving back to camp in the "golden light".
