Been going to Kruger since I was 2.
Can't remember much from those early years though!

But one thing that did stick in my mind.
Were those Warthogs in Skukuza. They used to graze on the grass on their knees. I was terrified of them and hid in the hut until my parents chased them away.

Great day Steve, obviously the ellies were a good luck charm or omen!

That's what the girl on reception said, and she was so right!

Planning a return in October, think we're addicts now.

My First sighting which is truly memorable was 3 Male Lions as soon as I entered Punda Maria Gate, very Early in the morning, who took over the territory on that day from an OLD OAK who ruled the Punda Lands for years and years.

We were fortunate twice when entering Malelane gate to see leopard after a short distance from the gate.

We also have seen lions just after entering the Punda Maria Gate on that first gravel road

:) Kallis I do not think the lions that we have seen on that morning were the one's that took over from that Old Oak.

Punda Maria is simply an awesome Gate to spot Lions, although many disagree on these forums, but a lot of people who enter and stay at Punda are treated to the Lion Sightings, and the same goes with Shingwedzi. I personally have had Lions as a first sighting many a times staying at Shingwedzi or entering Punda Gate early morning.

Grantmissy, it depends on when you saw them, because the first gravel from Punda Gate happens to be Thulamela Loop which falls under the pride boundary of the Old Oak, and therefore there is a good chance that you might have seen them.

I just thought I would ask everyone on this group if they get the same feeling as me everytime you enter the gates of Kruger.

I feel like my heart is skipping a beat, in the excitement, and that particular feeling in the heart of anticipation that something might just appear out of the bush. It is simply amazing to have this feeling early morning, and than out of no where you have a first sighting.

Good idea Kallis.

Excitement, anticipation and that feeling that I am entering a totally different world in which the animals rule. My senses are on full alert.

My experience, exactly.

My most exciting first sighting was Sable after entering Numbi. It was a year when there had been a very bad fire and the veld was decimated. I doubt they would have been visible otherwise.

One year it took ages to have my first sighting. It was belting with rain and most animals were taking shelter.

At some point I saw movement and took a picture of these magnificent Kudu.

In general we see the following more regularly as first sighting depending on the Gate that we enter:

Pafuri – Kudus
Phalaborwa – Impalas
Orpen – Elephants
Malelane – Giraffes
Phabeni – Cars and various other Automobiles

In February we spent 3 weeks in Kruger. We entered at Phabeni Gate, drove along S1 and saw after 1/2 hours drive a Leopard in tree. On the way out again on S1 we saw another Leopard in tree but this time very close. I hope when we come back in October we will see another leopard.... wishful thinking!
