Sonop

Sonop

Sonop is near an army base, and close to a trails camp and a picnic spot. The army camp is/was between Shishangani and Sonop. Also called Shishangani. I worked in Satara about 8 years ago, and we used to have fun evenings out to the base. It is the only reason I know there used to be a camp there. Unfortunately nothing more interesting I can tell you

I reckon the Ngotso dam to be quite special. S100? I closed it down remember?

Lower Sabie just north of sunset dam.

Pkop area around Shi'tlhave dam.

Punda Maria bird hide and waterhole. I would love to see some of the best sightings from this hide.

Strictly speaking Waterholes, dams and rivers are best during the dry season for game concentrations (mammals). During summer they are still worthwhile for birdwatching and scenic beauty. In summer most game is spotted from the roads especialy open terrain which was burnt recently.
I always go December/January and are never dissapointed with the total experience as compared to dryer season trips. The burn reports the past 6 months virtualy guarantee above average viewing .

Goedgegun is indeed a very nice waterhole, plenty of general game is always present.

That special place that you mention, I have been there it is really nice, would love to see it with water in it. Nigel Dennis's book Where to watch game in Kruger, mentions it as well and has taken a photo of it...

Sunset Dam at Lower Sabie and Kanniedood Dam at Shingwedzi are always good spots. Engelhardt Dam at Letaba has a very nice birdhide and driving up to the lookout point overlooking Engelhardt is quite an experience. It's beautiful up there.

We went there few times in early Sept, because it was 1 of the few spots that still had water AND the birdlife was amazing from both view spots. Saw little Grebe (dabchick), Common Moorhen, Jacana, etc etc
