Saw wilddog there about 2 weeks ago - running up the road towards us and then just lay down on the side of the road - great sighting.

Can anyone remember and therefore compare the road from BEFORE it was tarred vs after?

A leopard-in-grass sighting in 1988 is all that stands out for me! :hmz:

Any recent sightings on this road? Would be grateful if you would share.

I have taken this road many times and it has been a mixed bag

Last year May we saw a leopard in a tree with a kill , an odd elephant and rhino.

On a sunset drive from Skukuza the rangers took us on a drive on Doispane Road. We saw 3 seperate leopard sightings .

Its a good 35km road and I prefer Skukuza- Lower Sabie road

The S1 is a road of mixed fortunes! Drove it from Skukuza to Phabeni and saw only Impala and zebra! When we came back we saw lion, elphant and rhino!!
BB- same hear. Drove this road in December and missed a leopard 3 times! But the scenery makes up for these nearly sightings!!

As beautiful as that scenery allways is they sightings are always mixed up.
One can drive that road up and down without a great sighting to see and the, when you least expect it, the most beautiful sighting you have ever seen.

I'm sitting in -2 degrees, overcast and half dark at lunchtime in England. JUST GIVE ME ANY ROAD IN KNP!!

Sorry, but feeling that my trip along S1 in September is a lifetime away still  and I'd be happy to see a single Impala right now.

The S1 has never failed to disappoint. Touch wood!
Have had some amazing sightings, over the years, including both wild dog and leopard. Spotties often have their dens in the storm water drains just off the road.
Always travel the S1 when I'm in the South, it has almost become routine :)

This is one of my favorite roads. I've seen the big five a few times on this road including a lion kill.
My favorite experience on this road was when it was just me and my dad on this road because it had rained that morning so no one else wanted to come on the drive with us. So we went and we saw buffalo swimming in the river by kruger gate. Then when we got in there was a hyena den that we had seen hyena everyday there that trip and we saw them again. Then we turned off to do the doispan road and I spotted a lion running and it was so fast. Then I see a fight between a zebra and a pride of lions it was AMAZING. Then we war he'd them killing and eating it. After an hour we left and we saw a herd of elephant and rhinos in the road with a calf. Then we got lost and there was only ten minutes left and so we got the gps out and set it to the gate. We were driving right on the speed limit when my dad suddenly pushed on brakes and reversed I looked and there was a leopard right next to the road. We could only watch it for 1 minute and then we had to leave. But this is my favorite experience in the park. We saw the big five in one drive.

I'm planning to enter the park at Phabeni on 11 March - on my way to Skukuza for 3 nights. I will probably also exit that way. But I will take the S3 (Sabie River Road at the first crossing with the S3) and the onto the S4 before I join up with the S1 again.

I had one of only two sightings ever of side-striped jackal on the S1 between the Albasini Ruins and the S3 crossing.

I have been lucky with Leopard and White Rhino when I did this road 2 years ago. Probably biggest Male Leopard I have ever seen crossed the road right in front of me when driving on a very misty morning out of Skukuza

giving my age away again (damm) but I can remember many trips along the road before it was tarred, always good sightings and then it was not quite as busy

Enjoy
