For me it is the S100, S41, Breakfast at N'wanetsi.

I have seen lion many times on the 100 and Cheetah on the S41.

I also enjoy going to Timbavati for brekkie and have seen some very entertaining and interesting things on the way there.

I do not enjoy the S89, s90 as I have seen very little of any value on this road on any of the times I've been on it.

We do all know though, that it is very much a matter of luck and timing.

We did see leopard on the main Satara Olifants highway, 900 meteres from the Olifants turnoff.

The view from Nwamanzi is stunning but beware of the thieveing monkeys. They jump into your car and grab stuff really quickly.

BH :D

I again agree, didn't mention the s41..I too find it a very rewarding road. Neither do I like the s89 or s90.... My personal feeling when driving there.....'its too dry' Don't know why, but to me it feels like driving the road to Orpen dam.... very dry

Hey GS, DD, long time .... :D

DD. Best advice I can give you for doing the S100. Do it with your eyes open.

What can I say, it worked for me and I have usually found it a rewarding drive. 8)

In the words of one of our more famous comdians, "Keep 'em pealed. Hou hulle gepiele."

(I must admit that it has not been as rewarding of late than it was many years ago, but still an great drive.

Can you deny that N'wanetsi is one of the most beautiful places in KNP. It ranks right up there with the view from the Olifants viewing deck. AMA-ZZZZIng.

Sweni bird hide was awesome. And you have to take along a few sundowners to Nsemani dam. Just sit there and watch the hippos and the fish eagles and yuo may see the lions I saw there a few times.

You see the problem was that WTM joined me last time...and he distracted me with bird sightings...so I probably missed all the animals

Nah DD.
You probably just scared them all away.

You can't blame the wild garden man when he's not around to defend himself. That's wrong boet. :naughty:

BTW, aren't birds animals too?

They are the thing we look at when the big 5 are in hibernation mode. The birds are fascinating and colourful. Very worthwhile to look at, espcially the double breasted matress thrashers you see around the pool.

Okay folks, here's another question.... S100 first thing in the morning? Last thing in the evening? (or do the night/evening drives from Satara tend to swing down the S100?) I'm hoping to have the best chance of seeing every cardboard cut-out possible. :)

Our night drive did the S100, out and back.

Stark, it's a good choice.
I have always found the waterholes very productive.
On my last trip to that area, I spent some while watching a skittish herd of thirsty Zebra weighing up the situation, while a pride of Lion lay sleeping metres from the water.

Hi stark

Many people from satara race down the S100 first thing in the morning as the gates open, and many people do the same thing in the late afternoon before the gate closes, we have found that the majority of our best sightings on this road have been around midday to early afternoon,(11-3pm) no matter how much some people may not like this road they cannot deny that the scenery is great and we always stop and look out over one of my favourite views. There is also a certain place where my family must have seen lion at least six times in exactly the same place , next to the shibotwana waterhole. as for the night drives, we have been taken down the S100 before and it was great as we saw two lioness and a male fending off hyena from a buffalo kill.

  Absolutely. Love it! Even if you are really UNLUCKY and don't see anything on the drive there, Nwanetsi is absolutely worth it

I tend to agree oddy, on our best of many lion sightings on the S100, we left Orpen at opening time and hit the S100 about 9h45, and came across this.

As most of you know, lion is not my favourite sighting, but I won't say no to riding in the middle of the pride!

Brilliant sighting BB!

The S100 also is a favourite with us - lots of lion sightings, and a cheetah too! But ... we try to avoid it in the late afternoon - lots of speeding cars and too much dust to see anything!

wanderw, at the end of a long day of charging to N'wanetsi for brekkie and then going to the Sweni Hide, Gudazane Dam, doing the S89/90, Olifants for lunch etc. I find it very peaceful and relaxing to have a sundowner at Nsemani Dam. (then I go back to camp and collapse on my chair in front of the fire. Not enough sitting during the day. All this sitting is very tiring work. )

I do so enjoy the open plain savanah around Satara, but then again, each area of KNP has some special kind of Magic. The views from Olifants and N'wanetsi. The mountains of Berg en Dal, you name it and it has some kind of wonderful.

Paradise is such a special place filled with wondrous sightings and that sense of anticipation of what may be around the next bend.

(I am suffering from withdrawal symptoms here. I need a dose of paradise.)
