We will be going to KNP in December and our first night is in Satara.
One half of our group will be first time visistors to KNP which had me thinking... :hmz:

Should we drive straight to Satara via Orpen and do an afternoon drive from Satara?
Should we enter at Phabeni and travel via Skukuza/Tshokwane to Satara and drive the whole day?
Or should we enter at Croc Bridge and drive up via LowerSabie/Thsokwane to Satara?

I know it will be a long days driving as we are leaving from Western JHB/Krugersdorp area in the morning.
We will start driving at about 4am that morning.
I just though to show them as much of KNP as posiible.
After Satara we will be moving further North to Balule and Letaba

Any advice/comments?

That is the route I would choose!
I would prefer to get to the camp, unpack, relax a bit and then if time allows go out again for a drive before gate closure.
If you enter at one of the southern gates, its a long drive through the park and if you encounter any delays it just makes for stressful driving, not being able to stop for any sightings and possibly arriving late at camp resulting in a fine.

I would definitely go with option 2. I second all Elsa's reasons!

I would rather go with option 3, I much prefer the route from Croc Bridge to Tshokwane than the route from Phabeni to Tshokwane. Have seen much more and you can have a quick stop at Sunset dam and Nkumbe lookout. Croc Bridge is actually closer to Satara than what Phabeni is. You will just need to stay up to date with the roadworks between Nelspruit and Malelane.

Option 2 is the best in my view. Alternatively you can also enter Kruger Gate, which is a bit shorter in the park.

Be wary of the road to orpen. The section between Orhigstad and the tunnel is in a bad state.

Could also do Polokwane- Tzaneen-Phalaborwa and then down to Satara. :)

Thanks for all the advice!

So the list has been shortened to option 2 and 3.

@RoberT - We will be leaving via Phalaborwa so I would like to enter via a different route.
@Imax - Thanks for the heads up about the ohrigstad route. What is the road conditions like outside of Kruger Gate? Isn't it best to enter the parks asap?
@Pietskiet - Croc Bridge/Lower Sabie/Nkumbe/Tshokwane I like the sound of that route. I see Croc Bridge - Satara is 127km. Do you agree with 5 hours driving time? Would it be fine if we arrive at Croc Bridge at about 11?
@Guzz/Elsa - What about traffic around Skukuza area? Jhb/Phabeni route has the advantages of no road works and breakfast in dullstroom.

:hmz: :hmz: :hmz:
So it seems to be Skukuza with its history and shorter route versus Lower Sabie and Nkumbe lookout...
Such a difficult choice to make..
Which would you choose if it is going to be someones first ever Kruger experience?
Best photographic route? :cam:

When going from White River to Hazyview take the R40 rather than the R538, as this is also in a bad state with road works.

Road to Kruger Gate, surface wise is fine, but the usual traffic, pedestrians and domestic animals on route.

My honest opinion (and I'm sure many will not agree) is that if someone has never been to the park, take it easy on the first day. I know one wants to maximise your viewing time, but I have personally found with family coming from other Europe is that the long drive there, then a long day with great distances, coupled with not quite understanding how to look for game can be quite exhausting. I have overdone it on the first day, and have had my visitors to the latter part want to drive less and rest more at camp. Taking it easy the first day and upping road time from there, has worked better for me since then.

Doing Phabeni / Kruger Gate is shorter than CB to travel to. CB to Satara or Phabeni to Satara is much of a muchness as on both you have a break at a camp (Skuks / LS) and another break at Tshokwane. With the CB route however you have another leg stratch at Nkumbe.

Reading the above, the choice is tough. probably best settled with the tossing of a coin...

I agree with you Imax. Toss a coin

I have done the Phabeni route, entering at 9am. I was driving alone and quite tired at the end of the day, but I did rather enjoy it.

I love the Croc Bridge idea, as so many game filled areas are covered. The only problem there could be roadworks. That might be my first choice though.

If time were not an issue, I would enter at Malelane and do the gravel road to Croc Bridge and then through to Satara.

Thanks guys!

The coin seams to be loaded in favour of CB-Satara at the moment..
Will follow the status of the roadworks as the time comes closer.
The CB low water bridge is always a nice way to enter Kruger.

Can already see myself taking a break on the deck at LS.. :D
