Hi There all

Has anyone done the drive from Bateleur to Olifants?
How long is it more or less, how long will it take? Will we need to get on with things?

Thanks and regards

Bateleur to Olifants is between 130 and 150 km, depending on the route:

From Bateleur back to the tar road is 21 km along the last part of the Red Rocks loop: This would take at least one hour.
From that junction to Letaba is 85 km if you stick to the tarred road (in my case that would take about 3 hours at least), so I figure 4 hours to Letaba.
Then your options are either sticking with the tarred road to Olifants (about 30 km?) or taking the river road (about 40 km). So I guess another 2 hours at least.

I would take leave Bateleur early-ish and aim to have tea at Mooiplaas and lunch at Letaba. Then a nice drive along the river to Olifants.

Hi, can you reassure me that we can do this drive without too much stress

We need to have 2 bedroom accomodation and when I booked last November all I could get 4th and 5th October was Mopani ( we love the camp by the way), our last night (6th) needs to be down south as we fly out of KMIA lunchtime on the 7th. At the time I didn't worry too much as I thought as time goes on I could change Mopani but after checking every day still no luck in getting something else. Doesn't help that I found out recently that it is school holidays :|

Hi Merlin

That is quite a ways (about 210 kilometres), but make sure you leave Mopani at gate opening, and you'll get to Skuks in plenty of time. Make sure you don't deviate from the tarred road too much, and you'll be ok.

Merlin, we recently did Phalaborwa-Skukuza easily, and we didn't go through the gate till well after 8am, getting to Skuks about 4.30pm. We also stopped at Satara for a bite to eat in the Mugg & Bean.

We also stopped for a lion kill, a cheetah, and several Ellies!!!

Of course it will have to be a travelling day, not a serious game drive day, and ideally you would not want to do that, but if needs must, and you can't change your bookings, you will be fine!!!

If you leave Mopani as early as you can, you will easily make it.

I'll still hold thumbs for you that you can change your booking!!!

Wishing you a wonderful trip.

hi there, after many self drive trips to other african parks we´re finally taking our first trip to the kruger in may this year. would hugely appreciate any comments and advice (anyone spot any problems ?) on our drives between camps and loops from camps. we tend to be pretty shy of crowds so would choose "back routes" where ever possible. scenery, birds, flora and all the small stuff are just as important (or more so!) than any chances of the big 5 and co.

here´s our itinerary.

nelspruit - biyamiti, 4th may .... scenic route? driving time? ....need to be in camp in time for sunset drive at 16:30

biyamiti 3 nights best loops? activities?

biyamiti - talamati 7th may route? driving time? again aiming for sunset drive at 16:30

talamati 3 nights best loops? activities?

talamati - shimuwini 10th may.... route? driving time? no rush for sunset drive...taking this following day

shimuwini 3 nights Loops? activities?

shimuwini - sirheni 13th may route? driving time? night drive

sirheni 3 nights drives? activities?

sirheni - punda maria 16th may route? driving time (guessing this one is no prob at all)

punda maria 2 nights actvities?

punda maria - leshiba wilderness (nr Louis Trichard) route? driving time? Shopping?

so...that´s a lot of questions but i´ll be immensely for any Input from you experienced folk.

cheers and many thank in advance

That sounds like you have a great itinerary going there!

I am assuming you have a Kruger Park map book so you can follow any routes given?

But firstly I would say to get to Biyamiti from Nelspruit, enter via the Malelane Gate and make your way to the camp, check in 2pm, giving yourself enough time to unpack, settle in before the drive.
