In my opinion Hoedspruit in the afternoon to Letaba by night is too much.
Why stress yourself when the whole idea is to enjoy!! Rather stay at Satara and relax and then next day is also easier.
If you love it then come again, for longer and see different areas.
Believe me,trying to do too much is counterproductive. One could easily stay in Satara for a week and still want more.

Don't be fooled by the relatively short distances between camps as it takes waaaaay longer than you think especially when a cheetah decides to walk across the road in front of you with cubs in tow and decides to lie next to the road with the cubs frolicking - you won't want to do your trail.

Animals always appear when you are in a hurry especially just before camp closing time.

Hi There all

Has anyone done the drive from Bateleur to Olifants?
How long is it more or less, how long will it take? Will we need to get on with things?

Thanks and regards

Bateleur to Olifants is between 130 and 150 km, depending on the route:

From Bateleur back to the tar road is 21 km along the last part of the Red Rocks loop: This would take at least one hour.
From that junction to Letaba is 85 km if you stick to the tarred road (in my case that would take about 3 hours at least), so I figure 4 hours to Letaba.
Then your options are either sticking with the tarred road to Olifants (about 30 km?) or taking the river road (about 40 km). So I guess another 2 hours at least.

I would take leave Bateleur early-ish and aim to have tea at Mooiplaas and lunch at Letaba. Then a nice drive along the river to Olifants.

You did mean Bateleur to Olifants?
I see from your signature that you are moving from Sirheni to Olifants in September?

We are 3 friends travelling. It took us forever to settle where, what, when etcs.

I wrote my signature with what I thought we booked.

I took out the reservation to pay the amount owing and saw that we at Bateleur for 1 night, then Olifants for 1 night, had a quick look at a map and had a little bit of a panic attack.

Thanks to feedback from forum, all’s good

Thanks

Hi, can you reassure me that we can do this drive without too much stress

We need to have 2 bedroom accomodation and when I booked last November all I could get 4th and 5th October was Mopani ( we love the camp by the way), our last night (6th) needs to be down south as we fly out of KMIA lunchtime on the 7th. At the time I didn't worry too much as I thought as time goes on I could change Mopani but after checking every day still no luck in getting something else. Doesn't help that I found out recently that it is school holidays :|

Hi Merlin

That is quite a ways (about 210 kilometres), but make sure you leave Mopani at gate opening, and you'll get to Skuks in plenty of time. Make sure you don't deviate from the tarred road too much, and you'll be ok.

Thanks Porridge, it will be the first time that we hope we don't see too many animals! I would be gutted if we couldn't spend as much time as we want at a sighting.

We will keep checking and hope for an opening in a different camp, hoping for Satara, Olifants or Letaba. But will take any 2 bedroom accomodation in Central or Southern Kruger.

Merlin, we recently did Phalaborwa-Skukuza easily, and we didn't go through the gate till well after 8am, getting to Skuks about 4.30pm. We also stopped at Satara for a bite to eat in the Mugg & Bean.

We also stopped for a lion kill, a cheetah, and several Ellies!!!

Of course it will have to be a travelling day, not a serious game drive day, and ideally you would not want to do that, but if needs must, and you can't change your bookings, you will be fine!!!

If you leave Mopani as early as you can, you will easily make it.

I'll still hold thumbs for you that you can change your booking!!!

Wishing you a wonderful trip.

The 2 bedroom bungalows or cottages are in short supply!
I am sending you a pm.

I once did Shingwedzi to Berg & Dal in a day....in July. And we saw Lion, Leopard and Pangolin on the way.

In October the camp gates open at 05:30 and close at 18:00. So you have 12 hours at least to travel 210 km. Should be quite comfortable. In addition you have nice, evenly distributed stops on the way (Letaba, Satara, Tshokwane).

Thanks for the reassurance, Albert, Kite and Crested Val. I know it will be a long travelling day but it seems achievable without being too stretched. I know we are being fussy wanting a 2 bedroom accommodation but we would prefer to keep the long drive than swap to 2 separate huts. Will keep our fingers crossed for an opening
