Things to do and see in camps in Kruger

Unread postby Mars » Mon Aug 18, 2008 12:31 pm

I would like to know a few things. I am going to Kruger again in a month or two and have read a few topics on the camps that I will be visiting.

Lets start with Skukuza. Things to do there is : to sit at the river (looking at the bridge, animals etc) visit the train restaurant. See Hyena's at night at the fence close to the safari tents. Also listen to the ''leopard'' walking at the river at night.. and then just outside the camp lake panic, also the wildlife film showing at different camps. and the museum. What else is there that I miss in Skukuza ?

Lower Sabie - The deck, the river, also heard there is a lookout point on/near the deck ? Can someone help with directions ? Then animals walking at the fence at river view tents early morning. also the dam just outside the camp. What else ?

Satara - New to this camp, only know about the waterhole where the webcam is ?

Orpen - Also the waterhole - what else ?

Olifants - the river view and ?

Letaba - the elephant hall ?

Can anyone please tell me what else I'm missing in all of these camps ? I would like to do more while in the camps with my visit this time for example the lookout at lower Sabie that I didn't know about...

Thanx

Skukuza - the bats at the take-away lapa and the dog cemetery

Lower Sabie - walk past the restaurant towards the safari tents, you will see steps leading up to the lookout.

Scops owl in a tree opposite reception.

Great birding in all the camps!!

Enjoy the trip!

Looking for the Bush Babies at night at Skukuza. (We had one come and find us. He just jumped on our table and made of with some of our food).

Looking for the Scops owls at night at Satara and also watching the hyenas patrol the boundary fences.

While at Letaba, we spent ages at the restaurant overlooking the river and watched the ellies bathe and drink. Also many birds to see in camp and a lot of them are tame enough for you to get good pictures of them.

Olifants, the view is definitely a thing of beauty.

At most camps there are organised game drives (either sunset or night drives and you may get to see some of the nocturnal animals.

In short, there are millions of things to do both inside and outside the camps.

Conservation is not an option.
It's imperative.

Leave KNP alone. Go build a hotel someplace else. Reserves are for the preservation of wildlife.

Think Pink. ..

Hi there

I have to agree with BH about Letaba and Olifants and as for Satara.
I just need to add that it is not a river camp, meaning you don't really have the luxury of sitting and admiring the river and life around it..but Satara is one of those camps that you don't really want to be spending a lot of time at...just because the surrounding areas are teaming with game and there are so many great places to drive to.

A couple of things to add:
Skukuza, take a trip to the nursery.
I like to take time at the Kruger tablets a little way from the camp.

Lower Sabie:
chill at sunset dam.

Orpen:
Have a look round Rabelais hut. There are some intresting pictures on the wall and a bit of history about the roles that the Orpan family played.

Olifants:
there are the bike trails if you are that way inclined.

Letaba:
Enjoy the Bushbuck. It's a special camp with great atmosphere.
The bird doesn't sing because it has answers, it sings because it has a song.

At Skukuza there is also the old original tourist hut and the moorings of the old ferry to see. When facing the river at the restaurant they are about 100m off to the left

In Skukuza the library, specially in the heat. A well working air condition makes it comfortable to look around. At my last visit they showed wonderful pictures.

In all camps, it is lovely to make a dip in the pool in the evening, so relaxing.

And also walk around and look for the smaller things.

From Letaba, make sure you visit the Matambeni hide.

Also, are there any "resident" animals like genet cats in any of the camps?
