Actually, the pafuri forest is great for photography. Even in the middle of the day you have great light due to the fact that the leaves break the light.

It was quite comfortable with my presence , I walked closer and passed within 4 metres without it appearing stressed .
Such is life at Pafuri .

RP was very fortunate to see and photograph the lion , quite a scarce item up there , but then there is so much more up there to make up for the big cats scarcity .

Richprince, for your info, braaiwood is still sold at the spot @ R19-00 a bag. gas braaiers are up to R17-00 from R15-00. We visit this spot regularly for breakfast: at least once every 2 months. The trees are just amazing!

Just watch out for the vervets, but Frank keeps them at bay

Just returned from a wonderful stay in KNP.. We also drove to Pafuri from Punda Maria - It´s quite a drive there but it`s definately worth it!

I travelled the entire park by now but that area is definately the most beautiful of all! Pure magic!
It was so hard to leave that area and drive back to camp...
Lovely landscape along the river- Nyala, Vervet Monkeys and Impala every few metres and even a nice ellie breeding herd crossing the road!

The picnic spot is so peaceful and relaxed - so nice!

What a great time we had up at/near Pafuri last June! The most beautiful area of the whole park!

Further north, as we got closer to the S63, the vegetation became greener and more dense and we saw Baboons, Impalas and Kudus.
Then the turnoff to Pafuri came…
Already after a few metres on this road we realized how special and unique this area seems to be! Huge trees, dense bushes, very green, several views of the Luvhuvhu river – it`s just beautiful! :cam:
Afterwards during our whole trip we often drove along river roads but this definitely had the nicest scenery of all! I was really looking forward driving here for the first time and I surely wasn`t disappointed!

We don`t like it when the grass is too long and it`s to bushy so you can´t see any game anymore… but that wasn`t the case here – visibility still was quite good.
We saw lots of Vervet Monkeys, Nyalas, Impalas and Baboons on this road (also further on to Crooks Corner) as well as Waterbuck, Zebra and Warthogs. Just before Pafuri Picnic Site also a Nyala baby!

Pafuri was really lovely! Stunning scenery just next to the Luvhuvhu – the atmosphere was so relaxing and quiet!

We also saw several Nyalas there, strolling casually through the picnic site. We also took a nice pic of ourselves – for this matter it was good were weren`t the only people there! Although there were just a few people around.

Unfortunately we didn`t have time to take a long break here for a few hours (what we would have loved to do) but nevertheless had a nice lunch break. While we were eating on one of the benches a middle-sized Water Monitor came climbing down a tree just next to the water.

It turned around and looked at us – posing for a nice pic! :cam:

Hi Safrica, I see yoou had the same impressions I had. The Pafuri area is stunning and has something very special that gets you deep inside.
Did you manage to meet Frank at the picnic site? We were there in August and had a wonderful day there and will definitely on our next SA trip, 2011.

Ndloti, RP certainly gets around

I will be there soon   I intend to have an early brunch there on old year's eve and new years day. I could not think of a more meaningful and beautiful place to say goodbye to the old and welcome the new... 8)

Can't wait.

Pafuri still has much of the old time charm.

Driving up there seems long but it is always much in reward, Babalala, Dzundzwini Mashikiri, Elandskuil, Kloppersfontein, Baobab Hill, Nyala Loop the Fever Tree forest, Crooke's Corner much of this was part of the Ivory Trail travel drive slowly and enjoy the mystery. Stop in the Fever Tree forest and listen to Natures Melody, there I go again . . . . .

The only of the the big 5 we have not yet seen there was Rhino and of the 4 scarce antelope species were Tsessebe.

We never miss an opportunity going there, we are very often amazed at how the sightings differ from driving up there and then the return trip.

Just some info:

While Pafuri is the most remote spot in the Park, times have changed, and there are some places close at hand that should be able to at least provide some airconditioned "resting" space in the event of ANY medical emergency...

There are a couple of lodges nearby, one just across the Luvhuvhu bridge...I'm sure they have some contingency plans...

Also, there is the National border post nearby, with a large police presence, so they would surely be able to provide assistance!

The new Ranger's post is also very near that, with complete communications and aircon!

I would suggest the latter, just turn right within sight of the border post, and keep going straight.

Maybe an emergency agreement can be made with the lodge?
